Does Creighton's McDermott Keep His Job?

What I mean is "Staying on the Planation" is a racist saying that is deeply ingrained in our culture. So much so that GMaC probably just said it without even thinking about what it actually meant. I'm glad he is taking responsibility, but it's not an individual problem, it's the racism ingrained in our language and our culture. Hatchet that out.

I have never said it, have you? Never even thought it. This is a Greg thing.....he said it.....he owns it. I don't think it makes him a bad person, just someone who needs to think before he talks. Especially when he gets emotional.

Not trying to say you have some sort of vendetta against him -- happy to talk about his coaching record alone.

And on that, despite the awful season we're in the middle of right now that will probably end with Prohm being fired, Prohm had substantially more success than McDermott did after the Hoiberg players left.

I'll always be able to think back to Prohm's teams winning huge road games over ranked opponents in Oxford, Lubbock, and Manhattan, as well as beating Tre Young when he was the darling of the national media.

McDermott? Pfft, I got nothing except a road win over an (excellent) Kansas State team a week or two before all the good players quit the team and McDermott backed up a U-Haul to make an escape to Omaha.

Prohm was a better coach and had a better tenure than McDermott at Iowa State despite its end. Period.

Substantially more success is basically laughable, since he's got back-to-back 20 loss seasons. That destroys anything McD did.

Yeah, it's weird. Maybe, a boomer-era saying? I've heard it before when mingling with rurals. I don't think Greg just came up with it. But maybe I'm wrong. Has anyone else heard this expression?

I assume it’s the based on the same as “off the reservation” but probably just a different geographical area or time period.

Not from anyone who isn't black. That is probably why the players who are black may have been shocked more than anyone to hear it coming from GMAC.

Very true. See, even in my last post I was assuming "white culture" when speaking of "culture." Implicit racism in action. Shame on me.

Don't be too hard on yourself, I'm not under any illusions I have spoken to every white person in the world. So I'm sure some have used it. My experience comes from holidays with my wife's family and yes.....the "man trying to keep us on the plantation" comes up frequently when we are talking/arguing politics. They have zero problem saying "the man" around me. And so they shouldn't. We either live together or we don't. Geez........now I'm getting all misty.

Not for awhile. Both are hopefully becoming outdated, thankfully.

There you go! One more reason not to take things so direct or seriously. Blacks sometimes say the 'N' word and don't get crucified for it. We need to lighten up. Progress is ongoing.

In my opinion, his players know him better than anyone. If they're still in his corner, I think it's a non-issue. He probably needs to go through some sensitivity training to make sure this sort of thing doesn't happen again.

...
It's why it's time to get WOKE and take a hatchet to white privilege.
Peter, I'm not saying I agree or disagree here, but this kind of statement maybe is best left to address in 'the Cave' ?

One of the reasons I love coming to CF, I have an affintiy for Cyclone fans, and the commonality of interest, the love for sports and ISU. I'd love to keep that.

Can't we try to leave it at that? If people want to go over to the Cave, it is their choice. We that disagree, are not that far apart on many things, IMO.

I've never heard it before. It's an odd saying for anybody IMO.
