Does Creighton's McDermott Keep His Job?

there are always going to be more important and pressing problems, and yes greg mcdermott saying something like this isn’t really a huge deal but that doesn’t mean people should just ignore it and not be like yeah don’t say **** like that

what he’s doing is exactly what he accuses others of. It’s a typical tactic designed to prevent any conversation from happening.

they want to keep their privilege. If somehow any other group gains rights, they believe they’re losing theirs.

chewy said a dumb thing. But they’re also having a big year. That goes a long ways.

Not sure how he didn't just lean into coachspeak right away for the team. Do the simple "that was a tough loss. We're a team. We're a family. We've got to stay together."

Emotion....although not quite like alcohol does sometimes bring out the worst in people. I doubt it was the first time he has used it in some context. People say things in the heat of the moment. For me....I don't know the man. In my eye's he is still the coach who deep sixed ISU basketball.

Eh, he's a poor man's Prohm in the deep-sixing category.

Could be wrong, but I think both of those guys are talking about the over the top virtue signaling that quite often happens in situations like this. It does tend to diminish the productive conversations and outcomes that could come from these situations. There obviously should be consequences, but let the people offended by the behavior or knowledgeable of the situation handle those.

It will be interesting to see if any players decide not to play the rest of the season. Sure they voted not to have him resign, but I would still think some players would be more hurt by this than others and could decide to make a statement. I hope they are supported if they do.

In many contexts, I would concur.

however, red herrings thrown out to disrupt attention, aren’t really intended to do anything to further conversation. In fact, it’s really the opposite.

This horrible choice of words take on more meaning when larger offenses are brushed aside. America has a long long long history of racial inequality, the is still going strong. All of these smaller in scope slights, are simply reminders to kids and communities as to how they’re still perceived. It’s especially bad because this is coming from a man that they and their family trusted to be a father type figure when they signed their nli

Eh, he's a poor man's Prohm in the deep-sixing category.

Lol, this ******** again.

Prohm beat six ranked teams with the Shayok team and three the year before. Even the bad team the year after Shayok won one game against a ranked opponent (over #16 Seton Hall).

McDermott beat one (at Kansas State a few weeks before he left for Creighton) in four years.

I know you hate Prohm, and there's not much to say to defend him at this point, but we'll be able to look back on the early and middle Prohm tenure with some fond memories.

McDermott was just getting kicked in the teeth over and over again until he left.

Mcd didn't have the luxury of a ready made roster walking in.

Neither did Prohm with the teams made of up of his guys that had ten wins over ranked opponents.

I am not counting his first two years where the roster was mostly made up of old Hoiberg guys.

Poor choice of words, especially in the Midwest. I would have used the word reservation.
Then the Indians would be upset.

In reality, slavery of the blacks, what happened to the Indians in this country, racism, there is so much to be ashamed about. So much to not be proud of.

I am glad we have come a long way way with civil rights, avoiding injustice where ever it is.

Still a long way to go.

At the same time I don't think we need to get over-blown on situations like these. No negative intent, apology made, move on.

I hate his performance. I don't care either way about him as a person. I don't know him.
McDermott's worst years pale in comparison to the worst Cyclone coach we've ever had.

What GMaC said is a great example of "implicit" racism, which is cultural and not individual. It's why it's time to get WOKE and take a hatchet to white privilege.

Not trying to say you have some sort of vendetta against him -- happy to talk about his coaching record alone.

And on that, despite the awful season we're in the middle of right now that will probably end with Prohm being fired, Prohm had substantially more success than McDermott did after the Hoiberg players left.

I'll always be able to think back to Prohm's teams winning huge road games over ranked opponents in Oxford, Lubbock, and Manhattan, as well as beating Tre Young when he was the darling of the national media.

McDermott? Pfft, I got nothing except a road win over an (excellent) Kansas State team a week or two before all the good players quit the team and McDermott backed up a U-Haul to make an escape to Omaha.

Prohm was a better coach and had a better tenure than McDermott at Iowa State despite its end. Period.

Taking a hatchet to Greg McDermott helps with police brutality against non-White people and low high school graduation rates for disadvantaged students in poor school districts (rural and urban) how exactly?

Yes, this is a rhetorical question.

I remember thinking after the GMAC tenure what if Colorado and Nebraska were no longer in the conference. So I checked, and had they left before he became coach he would have 8 conference wins in 4 years. As it was....he finished with 18. Which is exactly the number of conference wins Steve has now after the last four years. Which is why it is time for Steve to go. The difference between GMAC and Steve however is that we did have some success during Steve's last four years(wins over ranked teams, conference tourney hardware, NCAA bid)in contrast to not even sniffing anything during GMAC's years.

What I mean is "Staying on the Planation" is a racist saying that is deeply ingrained in our culture. So much so that GMaC probably just said it without even thinking about what it actually meant. I'm glad he is taking responsibility, but it's not an individual problem, it's the racism ingrained in our language and our culture. Hatchet that out.
