Honestly was a fairly common idiom 15-20 years ago.
He’ll be fine. Murph told me that Kirk Ferentz solved racism last year
I think he said it in the heat of the moment to shock them and get their attention. I think he knew it would be shocking language. I also think he realized pretty quickly that going there was a massive mistake.
I don't think he believes African Americans are inferior humans. He's been in this industry too long to have kept that hidden up to this point if he really felt that way.
Apologizing was the right thing to do, but I don't think he will (or should) lose his job.
Now for my serious answer, I think Greg will be fine, as he’s apologized and seems committed to making things right.
Now, if it comes out that this has been a pattern with him, then he’s in trouble
Per the OWH, McDermott said some unfortunate words during the Xavier game this past week-end.

Used the word plantation a couple of times during the post game talk to the players...
Just like using reservation in exchange for plantation. And I won’t even get into eenie meenie I grew up with.
And this from a guy who doesn't allow his players to use swear words in practice.
He did wait until yesterday to make any sort of public apology. That seems to be a bit forced if he realized immediately that he had made a mistake. I would have figured he would have immediately apologized by Sunday as opposed to putting something out at about the same time as his assistant coach made a statement for another media source. Not something you should say but not something he should be fired for either. Especially considering how he has been handling it since then. He's doing all the right things after saying something regrettable.
Honest-to-God question, is this a saying people use? It just seems like such an odd phrase. While I'd imagine his intent wasn't race related, it's just an odd saying.
