that’s a pretty big distinction lol. That’s what I was trying to get old knownothing to think about. Where, when, why, how? Context matters.
So what. At some point everyone needs to quit being so sensitive. It's like there is a contest these days to figure out everything we can be sensitive about. I have heard a ton of stuff that offends me in life but just move on. So sick of everyone being so offended at everything.

For the record I have heard the phrase with both reservation and plantation in my time. Yes, there have been and are plantations throughout the world, most without slave labor. That being said, I understand why the word is charged. I also understand that people make mistakes, especially when they grew up saying a phrase that wasn't understood to be as racially charged as it is today. Part of being a team is having the opportunity to teach each other and learning from our mistakes. If he has truly built a team the majority of his players will back him on this. If not, he is probably done.
Is he still bothered by it? Or did the apology suffice?
I guess where these arguments lose me is when the general public is more outraged than those involved. I guess I'll trust the opinion of those present who would understand much more about his intent and the context, and also much more about the type of person he is, over the enraged Twittersphere.

nobody is perfect but we should all strive to be better. McDermott seems to have recognized that what he said was hurtful to some. That’s good. But we shouldn’t diminish it when people do feel hurt. And it shouldn’t stop us from trying to be better. For example if I had casually said the plantation line, I’d look pretty ******* closely at other things and thoughts I had.
is anyone that outraged? I think it deserves discussion. If I had said it, I hope I’d take a good hard look at myself.

Just take a glance at Twitter. I'd agree no one here seems to be too upset about it, but there is plenty of absurdity on Twitter.
As far as I know there's been nothing but praise towards Greg as a person over the years. He said something he regrets and he's apologized. I imagine it was a phrase he said in the heat of the moment without the benefit of having much time to think about the possible effect of his words. It's much less than ideal, but it happens.
I can't figure out why this story is anything more than that.
Honestly a small handful (less than 10). I knew a lot at Iowa State but havent kept touch......there are no black farmers in the area of Oregon where I live. Just a fact of demographics here....

I totally agree with this. Far be it for me, middle-aged Central Iowa white dude, to tell a POC what they should think about this. No disagreement here.
I guess where my frustration lies is the automatic reversion to "he should be fired" by many. The fact people were offended (again, for the most part it would appear we are talking about people disconnected from the Creighton basketball program) should not be dispositive on this. Context, backstory and prior history are relevant elements to this, and it seems no one is too interested in that. It just gets plugged through the algorithm of "Said something offensive in nature, certain people offended, fire that person."
A little nuance never hurts.
It sucks that this can't lead to conversations where people try to understand how this could be interpreted as offensive by p.o.c. as well as how a white person can make this mistake without intentionally trying to demean anyone. If we aren't allowed to have these difficult conversations, things will never change. Nothing good comes from absolute views, it only further divides us.
Greg clearly made a mistake, I don't think it's fair to use that to label him in any way. The most important aspect of this is that he learned from it and is going to try to be better. In the end, that's all he can really do. Hopefully, other people can learn from his mistakes.

I didn't throw a fit. I changed my name and notified everyone of my previous name. Is that a fit? This Creighton assistant was so offended in life that he had to tell the AD and school president? Really? That is how offended he is? Get over it. Geesh. Quit trying to play woke white guy either. It's dumb. Some things in life are racist and stuff like this is watering down real racism so that people can grandstand and be a victim.
I agree to a point. But I don’t see many people calling for him to be fired. For every person on Twitter saying he should be fired, I’d bet there are 5 saying it’s no big deal and we shouldn’t even be talking about it.
if McDermott offered to resign, it’s obvious he thought it was a big deal.
I guess I think that it isn’t enough for someone to lose their job but it also isn’t right to ignore. I think it’s fair to have the conversations and if white people are bothered by it then maybe we should examine why.
