Diante Garrett: Fred Hoiberg's original point guard

One of my favorite things about Hoiberg's first year was watching Diante flourish. It was kind of the first time that I saw what I think Hoiberg's biggest strength is in action---trust. Hoiberg does a great job of trusting his players and it seems like he really believes that they can do anything.

Not here to bash the previous coach.... but this quote is the reason players have success under CFH.

“A lot of my highlights (came while) playing for coach Fred,” Garrett said. “That’s when I was playing with freedom and playing my real game.”

Its more about what CFH does and allows than what was here before. No other institution has what we have, and that is a the next great basketball mind.

EDIT: great read, thank you Rob.

Given what DG had to endure in his four years, I'd consider him one of the most loyal cyclone athletes of all time.

Who was the guy that they put on the video board right before DG on Monday? I just saw him as they went to DG. Was that a former player? He didn't get much applause, but I don't think people were paying attention at the time.

It's too bad he didn't have one more year of eligibility so he could play on a tourney team.

I always wondered if he'd considered red-shirting Fred's first year so he could have played with Royce's team.

Edit: already mentioned above...

I thought I heard "Warrick" for a last name, so it'd be Mal Warrick. Played just one season, 1980-81 averaged 4 points and 2 rebounds per game.

I also wish DG could have played for Fred a bit longer. That first year was very interesting. I remember CFH being quite active on campus trying to build excitement for the team through outreach. Lunch-time meet and greets at The Memorial Union was one of my favorite things to attend at that time and it was often a packed house. I remember CFH bringing DG to one of those and Fred allowing the crowd to ask him some questions. It was obvious how much DG was enjoying his time with the new coach and you could hear just how completely he was buying into the new system and CFH's vision. I was already excited for the Coach Hoiberg hire by that point, but seeing that sort of transformation in the leader of the team really galvanized my optimism.

I'm still going to wonder how much better ISU would of been if Brackins would have stuck around for his sr season as well? Would CFH have been able to take that team to the NCAA tournament as well?

I think so, or at least close. They were just a player or two from winning some close games, including breaking the OSU streak.

Would Wesley Johnson have been done by then if he had stayed?

DG year 4 improved so much over DG years 1-3. I also wonder how much better he'd have been with another year of CRH.

He seems like a quality dude and I wish him much success in the future

No overlap. Wes was drafted in 2010...he came here in 2006/7 & 2007/8, then Cuse 2008/9 & 2009/10

I seem to recall some consternation that Fred was so high on DG prior to coaching his first game. The player we got to see playing for Fred was completely different than the one we saw prior to that.

If you haven't seen Diante ball in a while, he's still got it.

This is a video with a bunch of ex-college and pro players in Milwaukee. If you can't find him, DG is on the team playing towards the camera. He's got the white t shirt, black shorts, and black hat.
