Diamond Head Classic bracket released

George Mason will not be a cupcake, the first game will be a tough one. Would be cool to see Frank Martin stomp and howl at his players if we get a match up with them.

Oh I hope the powers of the world give me a Iowa State vs Akron game that second round. I will be home in Akron that weekend and I could easily set up a huge gamewatch with my Akron folk and watch them cry in person

I will be in Stow, OH with the inlaws for Christmas. My late father-in-law was an Akron grad. Hoping for us to play like the favorite and just pound opponents. Let's act like an NCAA tourney team even during the non-conf games.

Agreed..there's not a single team there that should be an assumed win. Not even Hawaii. No one's mentioned them but I was relieved to see us not playing them.. they're not any good so it looks bad, but in their own tournament, they've shown to be very tough against some great teams. I remember watching them knock off xavier 2 years ago and kept close with miami for a half. I think they beat some other ranked team a few years back too.

It isn't exactly a juggernaut field, but it's refreshing to get into a true 8-team bracketed tournament for a change, instead of home-court matcups that feed into a neutral-court "finale."

Not a bad tournament actually. I'm thinking George Mason, Akron, and maybe Oregon State will be top 100 teams. Boise State is a fringe top 25 team in my mind. Not any opportunities for marquee wins outside maybe Boise but there'll be plenty of time for that in the Big 12. The difference between winning this tournament and losing to George Mason could be the difference between a 6 and an 8 seed in the big dance.

I am an avid long-distance ISU BB fan but haven't been to a BB game since the mid 80s. I am going to try and make it from Japan. It will be a great trip if I can make it happen.

Question. Has Iowa State ever faced George Mason before? I have tried to research if they had, but came up with nothing.

No.

2-0 vs Oregon State
1-0 vs Saint Mary's
0-0 vs George Mason
0-0 vs Akron
0-0 vs South Carolina
0-0 vs Boise State
0-1 vs Hawaii

Do we only play 3 games in this tourney since its on site? Seems like its two games against crappy teams at home then two on location usually. Don't get me wrong I prefer this setup either way.

I like this tourney, I don't think its a great field but that group is better than people are giving it credit. Plus, I think these games are where we'll see our lineup get its last tweaks before big 12 play starts. For a team that's as untested as us, I really like the idea of playing a tourney in Dec rather than around Thanksgiving. Fred coach teams have typically peaked right around this time and by then we should know about how the guards minutes will be spread out. If not, I think 3 games in a tourney style format will help figure some of that out.

Agreed - this will be a good tune-up before Big XII play - and the teams aren't terrible, so the RPI shouldn't hurt us much at all. Of course, we'll win the whole thing so that will be the best boost of all.

Yes, all at one site.

Oops, correction/edit --- there is an off-site game, Akron at SC ... I have no idea what's up with that.
