Departures?

Thomas wanted more touches, and Montgomery was a wuss. He got pushed around by smaller defenders all the time, didn't run his routes out, and just generally looked disinterested. Burton hurts, but he hasn't been the same since his soph season. Of what has been announced so far, I'm happy to see us clearing some area for new growth. Now if the kids can get through the weed out period, I'm sure they may actually learn to like Campbell. Right now though, I can imagine he's nobody's friend, because when all is said and done he is the one holding the axe.

Hopefully this strategy of letting a receiver with a huge size advantage gets utilized with this staff. I remember Lanning coming in and throwing that first TD pass to Lazard, who was single covered, only to have CPR say it was a ball he shouldn't have thrown.

He was right that it shouldn't have been thrown, but I agree that Rhoads obviously was against the throw up and see strategy of the B12.

We basically aren't losing anyone outside of the two deeps, so it's no big deal. If working too hard makes you not want to be here, we don't want you here. Burton and Montgomery have/had a lot of potential, but we brought in Jucos already for the Burton loss and we are pretty well set with talent at WR(historically for ISU at least). We already upgraded over Thomas. Sure his stats look great on paper, but we have other guys on the roster more than capable of scoring on those same 1 yard runs.

It wasn't thrown well, but Lazard made a big play out of it.

Montgomery had all the physical ability in the world but when you throw in his bad attitude it nullifies much of his positives. People seem to forget he was nearly kicked off the team last year.

Sounds like something the basketball team is going through except the last sentence.

Anyone that thinks 20 guys, most of which never saw the field, leaving a 3 win time is going to make a big difference doesn't understand how below average the ISU program was under CPR. Of all the departures there isn't more than 3 or 4 that will have a big impact. Burton leaving would really hurt if the poor guy wasn't pretty consistently not able to play. Montgomery is like Nader: guy could really do a lot of damage either good or bad, depending on the day. Thomas was a short distance guy, that was an okay backup RB. He will be missed, but nothing like Warren would be.

The departure of the coaching staff that somehow managed to lose to KSU is probably the biggest factor in determining the future of ISU FB.

You've got to be incredibly naive to think Burton's loss is the only one that hurts. Depth is a major concern in all sports. Look at the freaking basketball team right now. The ISU football team doesn't have a lot of depth. Losing 20 players hurts. It's not like next years team is going to be special, but when you lose this many guys it absolutely hurts. Now, maybe it won't make a difference. Maybe they'd only win 3 games with these guys on the roster, but it's one of those things that is hard to measure. Trying to bend it into a positive thing is pretty ridiculous though. The only argument for that is that some younger guys will get experience and that will help down the road. It won't help next year though and for that reason it hurts.

Not saying they won't hurt at all but not enough to cost us games. DM has been decent in the past but I don't think he is that much better than about 3 guys behind him.

Thomas is the only other one that I can see an argument for. He was solid but nothing he did looked to be overly special. Crony and the freshman should be able to full in nicely. If Warren goes down it may be a bigger issue but I really like croney and the freshman.

Just curious what players you think we will miss?

I didn't realize how much D-line we're losing after this year, that's going to be hard to replace with all the young guys we have. I hope they're going to be ready to go in 2017.

I am thinking we will look at some JC DEs and DTs to tide us over until these freshman are ready. Although it would be awesome if they were ready after just a year

I don't think Montgomery hurts just because we have a lot of young talent at WR. Hopefully guys take advantage of the opportunity and we find a star.

Burton and Severs are tougher losses. Very few underclassman lineman play. Losing upperclassmen lineman hurts whether it is as starters or as depth. Looks like we have some Jucos that can step in or maybe we have some younger guys that are now ready to play as sophomores or juniors.

Thomas hurts a little just because of his age. He did well as a true freshman and you would hope he would continue to get better.

That being said, this is just part of the process. Hopefully, the kids that are ready to contribute stay and the kids that now realize they can not play at this level leave.

Burton is the biggest loss out of anyone and I don't think its close. So many of our losses came on the offensive side of the ball. We do return a fair amount of guys with decent playing time though. Campos, Philbert (who basically was a split starter with Dagel), Dunning, Nick Fett (who only started one game but I thought outperformed any game Oni had), and Scoggins (who may not have started but certainly would have played a lot). My biggest concern about the offensive line is finding a center.

Thomas had a very bright future but honestly he was probably only going to get 5-10 carries per game, mostly consisting of short yardage work. I think the guys coming off of redshirts and the incoming guys can step in admirably for him.

Montgomery would have been buried in the depth chart at WR IMO.

We have a ton of DB's (incoming and current) on our roster. Makes me wonder if there is turnover coming there. If not, there will be major depth and competition at all DB spots.

I'm excited about the defense. We have good young quality LB's returning, a few solid D-lineman, and a plethora of DB's. The incoming JUCO DB's excite me also, and we have guys coming off of RS that I think will help the LB and DL also.

We will lose maybe 4-5 kids who woild have played this year....that's it. Burton, Montgomery, JT, and prob one more coming..severs maybe. However these kids don't start and are at positions of depth..RB/WR etc.. Now I don't think we lose any other O and D lineman in the 2 deep. Outside of that who cares..time to start over and get rid of dead weight. People also seem to forget guys like Thadd, Payne, both new freshman RBs, Catalina(thus far), Ogu, Green, will all start or play a ton..upgrade folks..especially in the secondary. Aside from Peavy and Moya I fully expect to see all new faces taking over playing time this year over veterans. A good thing. So maybe 6-7 new kids likely start? With another 1-2 who redshirted last year playing a lot...at least.

Losing 15-20 kids during a coaching change is not uncommon at all. Writing is on wall for some and I have to expect guys that were brought in a year ago who have career ending injuries will be gone as well..Ayeni, Luna etc..

I remember a lot of people freaking out over losing Nealy and Ecby at this time last year.

Who was the great white hype at WR that left to do porn shoots? Same thing there... Best living ex-cyclone to never play a down.

Depth is great for practice and competition but unless you have the right kids for the program it's not that big of deal at this stage.

I have a different take. I believe we had more talent than shown. The staff mostly failed.

Departures this year hurt for the immediate future that shouldn't even be a question. Depth is a huge problem at ISU and guys leaving means that it's even more of a problem for next year but I am sure the coaches are thinking about long term. So yeah losing that depth might cost them a good season next year but if they replace them with guys that are going to stay and be good 2-4 years from now that put the program in a better shape then you make that sacrifice. With Football you should really wait to evaluate a coach until about year 3-4 when his first classes start to become upperclassman.

For the most part we didn't lose depth for next year either. Just bodies on the roster that have been recruited over a time or two already.
