Defensive Coordinator Possibilities?

So it all comes down to who fits the mold and has Texas/ I35 school ties, and is a lockdown, bull noise, high energy guy, with great track record. Him SEC always had good D coordinators why don't we go after Mizzos DC Barry Odom, or Georgia's DC? Thing with these fellas is ISU will have to move swiftly and pay them 400k+.

FYI - ur not getting a callback from either of those coaches for under 1 million. Pruitt was making 1.3 million as an assistant at Georgia and Odom has or will be taking the Memphis job and will likely get upwards of 2.0-2.5 million.

We need someone able to digest and strategize for big 12 offenses as our defensive coordinator. Even though Toledo was in the top 25 in scoring allowed defense, that defense would get pummeled in the big 12.

My biggest concern was and continues to be not our new head coach. Its always been the ability to assemble a quality staff. Simply hiring all your coaches at Toledo is a huge huge Gene Chizik risk. Although i will say that i like his staff already more then i did Chiziks - the OC and DC are critical hires. Its quite obvious he's looking a different direction for his DC and not retaining his DC at Toledo. FYI - i don't care at all about his ties to any state. I care about his ability to execute X's and O's....

Good Luck Coach - I don't envy the position your in at all. Facing these offenses and talent on that side of the ball is detrimental to sleep!!!!

I like Orlando, but he isn't at USU anymore. He's at Houston with Herman, and is already earning more than Wally did here.

Gene Chizik simply hired his buddies because they had a pact that if one of them became HC someday they would hire each other. This is completely different.

CMC has gotten the Iowa State job and had a successful staff at Toledo that worked well together. It only makes sense that he would want to bring many of them on board since he was successful at Toledo.

The DC at Toledo has only been with CMC for one season. That is Jon Heacock. It is possible that he might be brought in later after the Bowl game. The DC prior to Heacock was not that great and is now a head coach at SEMS. I expect Matt Campbell to make a decision whether he wants to bring Heacock on board. IMO, Heacock will likely not get a shot at the Toledo job. He is not really a part of the Toledo program long term. He served as a GA back in 1983 at Toledo before being brought in as DC this past year.

This is probably the reason why it is taking a while for Matt Campbell choosing his DC. Not sure that CMC would take the risk of elevating Shane Burnham to DC at Iowa State. That would be Shane Burnham's first experience as being a DC. I just don't see that happening. IMO, CMC will pick up an experienced DC that shares his philosophy and who he feels will work well with the coaches he has already made a decision on.

I think there are a few people who consider themselves experts (think like the people that call into the call-in shows) and feel like Shane hasn't taken their expert opinions seriously. I'd ignore them.

All that being said, I doubt Shane stays. But if he does, it will be because Campbell thinks he is the best person for the job.
How dare you tarnish the rep of Cyclone Jerry. His nutcap alone should keep him out of the discussion.

I tend to think that a lot of posters look at Shane as a drinking buddy, and that colors their perception of him.

Whether he's great or not, I can't see where keeping or especially elevating him is a good idea.

I talked to Shane in the DSM airport in 2011 or 2012. GREAT guy. We were in the security line for at least an hour, and I wished the line had been longer. :twitcy:

How about Alex Grinch at Washington State. He runs a 3-4 defense. He also played at Mt. Union, I think at the same time as Campbell.

I think you look at the Oklahoma or TCU defensive assistants and look to see if they want a promotion. Toledo ran a 4-2-5 defense according to that beat reporter. That is what Gary Patterson runs at TCU. So his staff knows it.

Tressel at mich state is their co coordinator. He coached at Wartburg when I was there.

I would like to bring in somebody who can continue to bring in good D-Line recruits and the rest will take care of itself.

Oh, and they have to be a decent coach as well.

For recruiting purposes there's no way he waits until after Toledos bowl game.

Tressel is big10 and would be a home run hire bc they are known for strong defenses. I only mentioned those two bc the SEC as well is known for their defenses. I like to entertain the idea to get a defensive assistant from TCU, Baylor, or OU to be promoted too. This position is going to be a question on everyone's mind for a while I think.

I'm blown away by the price tag of some of these O/D coordinators, serious money tied in to the staff.

Defense wins games. Need a DC that can recruit and develope talent. I know Baylor, TCU, and OU have elite offensives. It would be nice to be the school known as having a good defense in the big 12.

Now these are just some interesting name, the two names I will mention are Barry Odom DC from Mizzu current staff, top 10 recruiter, Midwest guy. Or Todd Orlando DC from Houston Cougars. Both would be home run type guys. They both run a explosive D, but with this they will have a expensive price tag! So those are my two names that I will throw into this basket.

PS whomever it is needs to keep Eggen on staff bc he has been a very good recruiter for ISU.
Odom in running for Mizzou job, not happening

Jim Leavitt at Colorado.

Throw more money at him and he might want to return to Iowa.
