DEFENSE!!!

Iowa State's scoring defense rank = 38
Iowa State's scoring offense rank = 72

One of those seems better than the other.
No one is saying the offense has been productive this year, because it's not been, but sometimes you have to look at our defense and see it scares no one. At best this is an average defense, with a below average offense at least looking at their ranking.

I think everyone would agree that our current defense is average, compared to our recent standards. BUT the defense is still carrying this team, with multiple starters out.

In the last 5 games, the defense has faced 3 top 40 offenses (Cincy, BYU, TCU). The offense has faced 1 top 40 defense (BYU). Offense has greatly underperformed this year, and why I believe some of the defensive criticism's are a little misguided.

I think you are looking at the stats and seeing what you want to see, this defense has struggled the entire year getting off the field, very true agains the better teams. Against a team that has poor QB play it looks great, but when they play anyone with a pulse, it gets chewed up. We beat TCU because they were driving and fumbled the ball and the punt return for the TD. Did the defense play bad, no, but they were not getting off the field with a lot of 3 and outs either. What is strange to me about the defense is that it was set up to stop the passing attacks we face and does a horrible job against them, while you would think it would be easy to run against, and that is where we excel, most of the time.

The offense is a whole different matter, dropped passes and poor throws are its biggest problems, throw in predictable play calls and it has been none existent at times. The offense has not been nearly as good as many of us hoped with what we had returning, and Rocco has not improved enough to cover up the mistakes of the rest of the offense.

While it sucks giving up the dink and dunks, the emphasis of our pass defense is to not get beat over the top and keep everything in front.

Now saying that, I believe if Jontez and Coop weren't still hurt those two would be playing more man to man than we've ever seen.

Thereby allowing the safeties to help against the run and cover the middle better

Having 4-5 DB's out will cause that.

This defensive scheme has been light up in the past by the passing game, when they were healthy in the back end. Looking at Baylor a few years ago and others, we said it was because we were missing LBers that year. It's not the injuries that are killing us, it's the scheme we are playing in my opinion.

When you have to depend on the opposing QB to have a poor game to play well you are struggling on defense. How did the defense do against Colorado, Cincinnati and BYU, they got ate alive. When you get zero pressure on the QB play after play and allow him all the time in the pocket to make a throw, you are going to struggle. What is our defense doing to speed up the QB and force him into mistake, nothing that I can see. We in the bottom of the league in sacks and the take aways have been from a couple of games, ASU and TCU, the rest of the game we are averaging about one take away a game on defense, that is not enough in todays modern game.
You said the last four game we didn't get turnovers, I pointed out that we did in the ASU game. The Defense didn't play well against Colorado, Cinci or even BYU. The Colorado game was the most damning imo. We don't necessary disagree just correcting your comment as it relates to the ASU game. Glad I could give you a laugh.

Tackling has been poor, dline has been poor on pressuring the QB and we play soft in the secondary. Inspite of all that and a really mediocre offense (at best) they're giving us a chance to win. Overall disappointing but still a good job by Heacock. The Offense is doing them no favors.

Reread what I said, we got TO in the ASU and TCU game, when we didn't we lost. Those are the game we did get the take aways, when we didn't we lost.
Is it all on the defense, no, its not, all phases of the game have struggled at times, the offense has been inconsistent, the special teams which was a strength at the start of the season has been wrecked by injuries. Maybe we should look at the conditioning staff, because injuries have played a major role in the past couple of years, last year the LBers were all hurt and this years its the DBs and kickers. I could see one or two, but we are wiping out entire sections of the defense to injuries.

“It worked yesterday because TCU would turn the ball over, what did we have 3 take aways? In the 4 game losing streak we were not getting those TO and the other team would score a TD.”

What am i misreading?

You are misreading that I did not include the ASU game, which I did. When you have depend on turnovers to win games, you have to wonder if that is sustainable.

Our defense the entire time Heacock has been in charge should be enough evidence that Heacock knows what he's doing.

Outside of the first half of the Cinci game our defense has been good enough to win games. Despite all the defensive injuries our defense has not been the problem.

But here we sit at 6-4 after starting the year 5-0. We are 8th in the conference in total point allowed through 10 games, and the same place 8th on offense.

That's because the offense has sucked.

The defense gave up 24 points against ASU and Colorado, if our offense was competent those would be wins.

Scoring 19 points against ASU and 17 against Colorado is beyond pathetic.

The Professor. You just can never count out the defense.

Injuries. 3rd and long disasters. Months without a qb hurry. Linebackers that a run a 6.7 forty. DBs playing 18 yards off the LoS.

Yet somehow they only give up 20ish points and you have a chance.

You just cant doubt the man, and if you do, step back and reconsider.
"linebackers that run 6.7 40's."
I laughed so hard that I blew my beer out my nose!
Let's be generous. 5.7 40's!
