I wouldn't necessarily say less talent. Next year's team will have less experience but looks to be in the same ballpark talent wise IMO. Clyburn and McGee were both ultra-talented; Lucious and Babb were talented but more key due to their experience.

True. Maybe talent wasn't the right word. Top to bottom, I think next year's roster will be the most talented we have had. I used the wrong word.

Here is an outsiders view of the Kane ISU commitment... (Gotta like the "breathtakeing in his abilities description")

Evaluating DeAndre Kane to Iowa State

"In Kane the Cyclones get a big (6-4), accomplished, point guard who at moments is breathtaking in his abilities. He can score, he can break down defenses, he can deliver highlight reel passes. But he's always on the edge of playing out of control, and he crosses that line far too often. He's also a very emotional player, which can quickly become an obstacle."

Playing for a bad Marshall team, Kane pretty much was the offense. He averaged 15.1 points and 7.0 assists, but his scoring was primarily through volume. He took over 26% of the shots when he was on the floor (far more than any ISU starter), and only made 25% of his 3s. He was also one of the best players in the conference at getting to the line, but only made 52% of his free throws.

We've got the guy to harness that and stay on this side of the edge. We'll take the "breathtaking" part and run with it.

It's also kind of a foregone conclusion that his shooting and shot selection will improve from working with Fred.

If Kane or Monte or the combination of both are an upgrade on Korie (who with some exceptions was good), next year is WAY better.

Having said that, Hoiberg lets players play through their difficulties. He showed that he isn't afraid to let Lucious go out and play his game, even if it results in bad shots and turnovers. As the season went on, he became much better as a team player without losing his personal edge. Amazing ability to coach players like this. I'm sure this really helped Lucious be glad to finish his career with Hoiberg rather than Izzo.

Well, I'm pretty sure staying with Izzo was going to be permanent doghouse, but point taken.

He probably will, to an extent, but he isn't trying to make up for a year off either.

I also predict multiple threads saying bench this guy he's out of control and wishing we had KL back.

Gotta love it. We are talking about our 3rd straight trip to the NCAA tournament while Iowa fans are hoping this is the year for them. They must be so happy they did it the "right" way.

To be fair, they will also be heading to their third straight tournament

Not just ANY tournament. A third straight post-season tournament.

And not just any post-season tournament. A third straight national post-season tournament

Was that a sly way to refer to the Not in Tournament a couple of times?

My fav is how it's all about the 25 win total and this automatic 7 win increase every year. As if almost every real tourney team wouldn't have added wins to their season if they got to play some bonus home games against Grassy Meadow University.

Last year's team, by a significant amount.

Agreed.

I think we all know who the top seven or eight will be in minutes played, but it may take Fred even longer this year to find the right lineup combinations. Once he does though I think we'll have enough depth to find a way to get back to the tournament. By the way, I can't believe I just typed that with all the talent we lost from last year.

Pretty good stats at Marshall.

Yeah, I guess I don't get the nay-sayers on some other sites and blogs that think he's a selfish, immature player. Maybe a couple years ago - but come on. He was being asked to shoulder the whole team himself, and yet he STILL averages 7.0 assists per game? Coupled with the comments he made about liking to get his teammates the ball and being good with playing the 1? I dunno. Sounds to me like we have a gem here and Fred will make him NBA worthy.

It's hard to compare stats without knowing a lot about the talent around him, who he played against, and the coach of Marshall.

I think he's a big PG, who can get to the hole and distribute. He won't have to be all world in our system from a scoring standpoint. If he can play D, stay in control with the ball, get to the hoop (and foul line), distribute to open shooters, he'll do very well.

I see him jump starting our offense by getting to the foul line when we're stagnant. I see us scoring less, but playing better D.

He will likely get Thomas, Bluford and SDW some very open 3's given his ability to get to the rack. Niang too.
