There is no direct correlation between your 40 time and how good of a corner you are. Especially for the 40 time on a high school football recruit. How often is that ever accurate? Even if it was, fast people can run a bad 40 from time to time.

We've all heard CPR, on various occassions, say that he and his staff don't look at stars, they make their own evaluations. Period. The staff will live or die by their ability to accurately rate the players they offer. Either they'll do a good job of evaluating, or they won't.

Have any of us watched video of the kid? Have any of us spoken repeatedly with the kid, his coaches, others in the know? Do any of us have any way to measure his heart, or the way he plays the game? How many of us really believe Nigel runs a 4.73 / 40 on a good raceway?

I watched the Hudl videos that were posted right after he committed. The video was from this past year and he did look awful skinny but still had a knack for getting to the ball and wasn't shy about contact. Both are things I like to see in my DB's.

A few times he even dropped the hammer pretty hard on some kids and stopped them in their tracks which is tough for a 150 lb kid to do. Add 25 lbs onto that with maybe some room for a few more once on campus and things are looking good for me.

I really think this kid will more looks from a lot of other teams being one of the more high profile players on a high profile team this fall.

So I guess I'm not understanding your point. Is it that the 40 time is unimportant, or we shouldn't be concerned about the 40 time listed because it is probably inaccurate? Two completely separate things.

Actually I think there is but the research done on it has been for the nfl draft. Probably couldn't do research on this for HS players since as you mentioned, those times aren't accurate and even if they are they aren't from a standard setting as they are at the nfl combine.

Straight line speed (when the times are reliable) are a very good indicator of athletecisim. Especially for a relatively untrained high school athlete.

14 CB's at the NFL combine ran higher than 4.6 and LJ ran a 4.71.

Would it make some of you feel better if he proves to be more than worthy of a high ranking (star-wise), but he takes his services elsewhere - say, Tennessee or Arkansas?

A website says he ran a 4.7 40. Then another is posted later that says 4.5. Then some on here perform a little due dilligence and they come up with some good information. Transferring to play at a school that has pumped out D1 talent. Ran the slower time in poor conditions.

No, it is not a problem to question Rhoads and his assistants. However, let's save more for the end of the process and focus more on how it is exciting we have 7 recruits committed (highest # for this time of year in the past 4 or 5 years), our new assistants are involved with some of these early recruits (Sturdy & Douglas), the recruits are from across the country (does this happen without some big wins over the past couple seasons?), and Coach Rhoads has been drinking a gallon of organic whole milk a day so the tank is full.

Welcome, Mr. Tribune. Be All In for you senior year in HS and then the next 4-5 here @ ISU.

I would suggest that you look a little closer. That highlight video was released last Fall; but, it was highlights from Nigel Tribune's sophomore season. (That's why appears short and skinny compared to his present listed measureables.)

I see what you are saying, but a stated 40 time is a very important thing to be fixated on with a corner. There is probably no more important measurable when dealing with a cornerback, other than perhaps size.

Sigh...Why on earth would people even make this statement? CPR is going to get all the time that he needs and probably more, because Iowa State was THE WORST BCS TEAM IN THE COUNTRY FIVE YEARS AGO..

What bothers me is the assumption that, looking at the progressively better talent of this team, that anyone could possibly believe it LIKELY that CPR would continue to win 5-6 games a year.

I guess he just raised my expectations a little and I was hopeful that he could start to get some better kids in.

My only issue is that I think until you start to get some better overall talent, that there really isn't much upside potential from where we've finished (roughly .500).

A. The best recruiting week of the year last year was Thanksgiving. It's Independence Day!

B. Who says that he isn't getting better player?!!!! Good grief, do you actually look at the players, rather than their stars? David Irving is probably the best defensive end athletically....EVER. Including Berryman and Hayward! And he's just one example! Hello-o-o?

You know what? I don't have a problem with people asking questions. It's the whining and moaning that accompanies it that bothers me.

I just checked. By the 4th of July last year, the only players committed were Rohach, Meyers, Knott and West, if I can read right (debatable eyesight).

Then Seeley and Pavlenko committed later in July. So we are ahead of last year's pace.

And herer is Dondre Daley's profile, fwiw. He was a recruiting unknown (no profile) when we started recruiting him, he transferred into Tarpon Springs for his senior season.

NOBODY was bashing them.....the "negative" posters some of you keep crying about were either A) Just having some fun and joking about how we are going after non football players next ,etc or B) legitimately asking why we are not getting some of those guys......which....is a valid concern....expressed by many on here. Of course we all want five star recruits...But the reality is that it is likely to never happen. The coaches seem to have a plan. The idiots that sit here ******** on the commits seem to really think that the coaches are going out of their way to get the absolute worst players they can get to destroy the program. Nevermind, CPR's 20 million that he can give up, or the young coaches making six figures wanting to advance their careers...**** that, let's sell ******* shoes instead for 300 bucks a week.

******** all over kids that have decided to come to Iowa State, or questioning the coaches that they committed to, does a LOT to help too....

I get that you guys think you are cute, and that there are many who do that are not exactly Iowa State fans...But parents read these boards, and many of them are getting ready to send their kids hundreds if not thousands of miles from home.

I am fairly certain, if it were my child, I would be less than thrilled seeing ******* posts ridiculing my child, and his future coaches. And, make no mistake, you ARE questioning their judgement, and abilities to do the job they were hired for when you do this stupid ****.

CPR, and his staff, have had one game in three years that I thought they did a bad job in, and that was Colorado two years ago. The rest of the beatdowns have been a result of trying to build a program from scratch, and needing to upgrade talent and development. They, along with two years of Chizik recruiting, have improved the depth and athleticism of the program since mac cratered it.

This staff's track record should have given them enough credibility to at least give them the benefit of the doubt at this point.

When the staff takes someone early.....and this is pretty early.....they have decided that the kid is worthy of a scholarship and will be a contributor to the team. Sure, it would be great to get the top 250 recruits in the nation and beat out the Texas's and Oklahoma's for them. But it probably would not be wise to invest all of our resources in going after those recruits.

ISU has done a pretty good job of recognizing some pretty good young talent and gotten involved with some of these young recruits before they have gotten a lot of recognition. We need to understand that in many cases the Stars ratings has more to do with promotion and hype than an actual analysis of talent and playmaking ability.

We really need to trust the staff. It isn't like this is the end of January and Coach Mac is throwing out a scholarship to a warm body. Lighten up. And it really is not too smart to make comments that our recruiting class is going to be terrible. To those naysayers, I say "Good Riddance".

From the Ames Tribune article I thought this was an interesting quote from Nigel Tribune:

Tribune went to a school that had little exposure and appears to be an under the radar player. ISU didn't even know he existed apparently until he transferred schools. And then it sounds like shortly after that ISU offered him. Good size, tackling ability, and good speed sounds pretty good to me.
