Cytown Update

I used to just love going to kids events in multi million dollar facilities named for banks and still having to spend $7 a person to watch 12 year olds play bball for an hour.
Paying for ANYTHING just seems the norm now.

Great, ISU vs Iowa in anything is going to draw a good crowd, now tell us about the crowd for a game with Colorado or KSU? If they were charging $5 bucks a head to get in and parking what are they missing? A couple thousand bucks in a department with a budget over over $125 million. You want to bring in extra money, they could make more by selling alcohol at these events than charing admissions.
I agree with the comment regarding alcohol...this has been a mind-numbing, crazy position by JP over the years. At this point its millions in lost revenue.

A certain segment of the fanbase needs to get over the whole "get something for nothing" mindset. That ship sailed in D-1 athletics over a decade ago---Iowa State has just been behind the times. You don't have to like it--its simply the reality of where we are.

Back in my high school days 07-11 (in Ohio) it was $5 student tickets for every event, $7 adults, and $3 children under 8 or 10. Some schools charged an extra $3 for "reserved" seats on the 50 yard line/center court.

After my kids were finished playing HS sports a lot of our friends and other players parents said "you will miss it." Nope never did, I was burnt out after a decade or more driving all over SE Iowa watching my kids play sports. It's expensive, and while its enjoyable to do, it was getting very old. I think we went to a few games the next season to see our friends kids play, but haven't been back to watch their high school play in years. No reason, since I no longer know any of the kids or their parents.

We are back at it now watching our grand daughters playing volleyball and softball, luckily most are in Gilbert or a few surrounding towns and none charge admission at the lower levels. Nothing like driving a hundred miles for our own kids spending $15 to $20 to get in and then have to sit through a 3 to 4 hour JV and then varsity baseball or football games, and then turn around and do it an couple nights later.

Was in band for six years. Never paid to watch a high school game.
They don't charge the players either for being at their game lol.

People who are going to the softball and soccer games will probably go either way if they had to pay $10 or not. Wouldn't make much of a difference in the bottom line but can only help.

Not charging for attendance feels like they're admitting defeat, that the women's teams are here just to exist to exist. That the programs are so pathetic they're not even going through the effort of charging people to be there.

That is exactly what the women's teams are for. Without Title IX none of them would exist.

Yep. It devalues the sport involved; that it’s not worth money to watch.

Not all. Been to several where they don’t charge.
I have a middle schooler in sports. And starting in Middle school every school in our conference charges to get into games.

There may be a few out there, but the vast majority are charging, for everything, from middle school on up.

Hell the school I went to growing up charges for band and choir concerts etc.

Yeah, I don't feel like you can compare high school sports to the more minor nonrevenue college sports as some are doing. With high school sports you've got a captive audience of parents, families, friends, etc that you can grab money from because they are going to attend to support them. There's going to necessarily be a lot less of that at the college level. I imagine for things like softball, soccer, etc ISU is just hoping that some people show up and occasionally buy some things from a concession stand.

Not to mention a couple thousand dollars means a lot more to the high schools.

Local conference in north Iowa doesn’t charge for middle school. Seems to be a bigger city thing when i encounter it
