Cytown Update

Another day, another Pollard-hating burner on Twitter.
Yeah these people are losers. 100 times out of a 100 i'd take pollard. from where the AD was when he got here to now is insane.

I'm assuming like most of the burners they are younger fans who don't know what they're talking about.

Looking forward to progress on CyTown now that the weather is getting better. Please I need the distraction...

From what I can tell, the majority of the project is still on track. Construction on the remaining main buildings starting spring 2026 and wrapping up most of it by football season 2027. Hotel will not be done until 2028.

But expecting some announcements of any kind soon I would hope. (Following Otz extension announcement)

That's better news than I had heard all winter (Had heard Goldenrod was pencils down until a few leases had signed)

The latest update on the Cytown website is an article from January written about CyTown and other similar university development. It has a completion date of late 2027/early 2028. Can't say I'm not a little nervous with how we haven't heard anything in a while but no reason to panic yet.

this account always confuses me since they purposely never show the mcfarland clinic being built (I know they do it on purpose). The clinic was the first thing they were building, and they made a lot of progress on it.

I would imagine McFarland is going to take longer than the other buildings just due to more complicated construction process, more rooms and the infrastructure required for healthcare. The rest of the buildings will probably go up much more quickly.

I had forgotten until seeing the piece that Iowa Boys HS Tournament was moving into Hilton next year.

Has it ever been published what revenue impact hosting games will have on Athletic Department revenue? I would think getting Cytown done quickly will be important to keep from a fan experience standpoint.

I can't imagine that it's very much. Fans for State basketball are in and out, very few people stay. I think the IHSAA's moving of the tournament had more to do with scheduling conflicts at the Casey's Center than anything. There was starting to be significant backlash from the Wild and Wolves because they were giving up the arena for 3 weeks out of a 4 week window.

Its 5 days of all day basketball. And maybe in Ames changes to 6 days.

Hotel stays aren't the key for Iowa State. It's parking revenue, concessions at Hilton. And once Cytown is built, people eating/drinking at restaurants. A mini-version of P&L in KC.

It's all day basketball but the bulk of the fans are in for their game and then out. At the end of the day we are probably talking about a max of 2 establishments in CyTown. Those places will do better for Iowa State basketball games than they will for state tournament games. We aren't talking about revenue that's gonna make or break the year... Nobody in Des Moines even cared that the tournament left, that's how little impact it has.

Buzzard Billy's might be a little sad.

I never have understood how either one of those teams make any money. The wolves attendance always looks dismal to me when you see game clips.

Hate they went cheap and ugly with the cladding. The orange brick looks dated and tacky. That's the first building anyone is going to see.

False, you aren't going to charge for parking when there will be businesses open to the public. OVG is replacing Best, who currently manages the parking for JTS and Hilton. In addition, OVG will take over running concessions at JTS and Hilton, plus they will manage non-ISU events at JTS, Hilton, CY Stephens, and Fischer.

OVG has professionals who are experts at securing and running concerts and other live events, since their staff in DSM at the Iowa Events/Casey's Center does it daily. The ISU Athletics department does not have experience in what it takes to run large-scale music events like Luke Combs, whereas the OVG people do. Additionally, OVG has access to all the major concert promoters, so it's much easier for them to secure concerts than the ISU Athletics department.

Throw in running the boys' state basketball tournament, which is nothing like running the NCAA women's basketball tournament. OVG has been running the state basketball tournaments since moving to Wells Fargo Arena (now Casey's Center), so they are well-versed in what it takes to get people in and out of an arena, what load-in/load-out looks like, etc. Also, OVG has the staff to run all the concessions at Hilton and doesn't rely on students, since they can pull from their Casey's Center staff in DSM. I personally know the OVG Event Manager who managed the girls' state basketball tournament, and she worked 106 hours during the week of the tournament.

This is a smart move by Jamie, recognizing that his staff doesn't have the expertise to do this and contracting with someone who does.
Quite frankly parking shouldn't be free for Basketball. In a time of needing to generate additional revenue streams, free parking is just leaving money on the table.

Whats better for Iowa State Athletics? 50,000 fans attending the Boys State Tournament and those fans paying to park and buy concessions and some visiting bars/restaurants in Cytown. Or
Not hosting the Boys Tournament.

Every bit of incremental revenue is important when the House Settlement creates a $20M hole to fill. And the event happens same time MBB is in KC for Big12 Tournament, so facility is just sitting idle.
