Cyhawk postgame thread

Haven't rewatched yet, but here's my initial take aways a day later:

- The DL played out of their minds - especially Orange and McDonough. They consistently won and didn't let the Iowa backs through the line cleanly all day
- Marcus Neal is a stud, he was everywhere all day. I thought Tre Bell and Tshawn James were very good too
- That Rocco doesn't have a turnover through 3 games is a remarkable feat. He didn't have a great game, but he controlled it and didn't make mistakes
- We played maybe our 'C' game with a lot of bad mistakes- it really says something that we can win this game with that many mistakes
- Overby and Sowell really struggled, I think there were 5-6 catchable balls (not necessarily drops) that they didn't come done with that would have really changed the game
- I know this isn't a popular take, but i like the Hansen/Sama usage. Start with Hansen early, then run Sama at them for a while, then bring Hansen back to hammer the defense in the 4th quarter. They are going to have some big games coming up
- The muffed punt officiating was some of the worst I've ever seen. I didn't think the rest of the game was horrible, but that was VERY poorly handled
I think Rocco had an underrated game, if the recievers catch 3 or 4 of those really well thrown balls, the narrative would be different. He really only had 4 subpar throws i remember. The burkle catch I wonder if he was throwing to who tipped it or if it was supposed to go to burkle.

Wow…read BHGP analysis of the game today…what a bunch of whiny excuse makers. No objectivity at all. One example…

”It seemed like the Hawkeyes had gotten a stop on the next drive, but an absolutely horeshit gift from the officials giving Matt Campbell a timeout when he clearly had not called it in time, kept the drive alive.”
I heard the whistle (in person, not on TV) before the ball was snapped. So, not only did CMC call the timeout in time, it was actually acknowledged by the ref blowing the whistle before the play. Why do people make stupid arguments that are easily refuted and proven untrue? ,,,,, Oh wait, I know this one.

One time when I was bored, I took Iowa's winning percentage under Fry and Iowa State's winning percentage under the numerous head coaches. Iowa's winning percentage during that time was slightly better than Iowa State's (if I did my math right).

If someone wants to correct me on it, please do. But I agree with madguy30, Fry had a couple of excellent years, but the rest were like 7-5, 8-4 type years
OK, that closes this matter of records from the 1980s that are surprisingly mediocre given the legendary status of the coach. We definitely don’t need to look at men’s basketball.

But more seriously, I’ve preached for years that the weirdly delusional self-image of the Hawkeye fanbase is 100% attributable to the streak and their incessant need to compare themselves to ISU (and project that trait onto the Cyclone fanbase).

The recent "realignment" is the only time the Big 10 has been a stronger football conference than the Big 8/12, and only at the top because they've added so many teams that two or three are always Top 5-10.
And as much as I freely admitted to being jealous that the Hawkeyes could lose to ISU and then go beat up inferior teams in league and finish 9-3 I am now excited ISU has that opportunity to do the same!

I mean, seriously. UI might have the brains to hire Mouse as their next HC.

And every single one of us would be crapping our pants.
Let’s hope they take the dumbass route like ISU did with Coach Snyder.

Really love your Sam’s/Hansen take. Both are elite backs and have been successful all year.

Yep. That literally happens all the time. Late timeouts happen often and are very easy to acknowledge. Was very correct and not controvial at all.

Did they discuss how Iowa was handed a spark of hope as the refs stole a possession (not 1 play but an entire possession) in order to give Iowa's offense any semblance of a chance? An official literally took the ball from Iowa State in excellent field position and gave it to Iowa and a fresh set of downs, when that was literally the only thing positive Iowa could muster at all. In the last 30 years of the series, we have been d*cker a lot but that's the most egregious and sneaky ass dirty f*ck-over we've gotten from a Big10 crew. Just such a dirty little b*tch thing to do. Because it's completely untraceable and not accountable. Pick up a VERY CLEAR flag and claim some BS (like the Iowa player - who very clearly ran into our guy on his own - verifiable instantly on replay - was "pushed") and walk away all cocky giving Iowa the football. We had SO much momentum. Man, I'm gonna be pissed about that forever. Sneaky f*ckers. Game should have been 27-3 and we would all be re-watching a beat down on replay today.

He was speaking loud and clear
Everyone is insinuating they "Think" he was talking about the refs.

To me he was talking about mistakes more than anything. In fact he even says Mistakes at the same time he was talking bout 2 opponents, meaning we were also playing against ourselves with our mistakes. It very well have been he meant a combination of things, including the refs.

I think we can all assume he was talking about the refs etc. but claiming you know exactly what he was referencing in that quote is just not true.

He had a couple bad throws on deep balls. One slot fade to Overby and the deep crosser over the middle. Probably walk in TDs if he leads the receiver

It is amazing how many hawk fans I have heard grumbling about our easy schedule and how ISU winning 9 or 10 games with our schedule isn't meaningful. All the while completely oblivious to the fact that they have been the fake ID of college football fattening up on the pathetic B1G West for the last 15 years.

National media starting to say what we all have known for the last few years.

At this point, Iowa football feels like such an ossified brand that even if you gave Patrick Mahomes one more year of college eligibility and put him in black and gold, there’s no guarantee you would juice up that offense. Hawkeye fans must be tired of this. The latest 16-13 loss to Iowa State was a Kirk Ferentz greatest hits album, with 214 yards of offense and no passing game to speak of even though Iowa reportedly spent big money to bring in fifth-year senior quarterback Mark Gronowski from South Dakota State after two FCS championships. But the even deeper cut for Iowa fans is that Iowa State is now just a better, more dynamic, more fun program to be a part of.

Yep. While there were other issues, most definitely referring to the refs.
How blind can you be to “disagree” with something blatantly obvious?

He said “like we were playing against two teams”,

One of the reporters asked a followup question, saying he’d let that second part “linger”.

Campbell replied something to the effect that it that was probably better, to let it linger. Leave it alone.

Because everyone in the room knew he was talking about the refs, and he’d get a reprimand and fined by the conference if he were more specific

Hello? Clue stick?

Blatantly. Obvious.

If anyone didn’t watch his presser yourself, do so before you pretend to know what you’re talking about, please.

Rocco didn't force anything. The tipped pass to to Burkle was tipped at the line, tippe by Iowa defender and tipped b Townsend. Younger Rocco would have forced some things and who knows, makes an incredible play or a pick six.

He got rid of the ball quickly, didn't expose himself to big hits and managed the clock very well.

If you are looking for numbers, flash, heroics - average game. If you are looking for doing exactly what he was asked to do in this game - he get's an A.

I would love to beat down the hoks as much as anybody (stay tuned for the next couple of years) but this was the way to win this game.

Did you ask if they were studying for their masters or phds from UI?
Aren’t most students working on a Masters in Beer Studies?

When I was first a student, Welch Avenue Station was a bar called The Library.

Once one Saturday, I listened to a neighbor on my dorm floor solemnly tell his parents he’d been at the Library until it closed the night before.

I’m pretty sure the capital L didn’t transfer.
