....Iowa was on the verge of being....decent. Yep, decent. Never great. They've had some nice teams, lots and lots of hype, and if you go into pretty much any store in eastern Iowa, with all the Hawkeye garb, you'd think A LOT more has happened with Iowa football than actually has.
But Iowa football's most prestigious victory over the last 30 years (if you go by BCS/'meaningful' bowl games) matches what Kansas has done. And they were against marginal ACC teams (names escape me).
That said, I actually like their football program looking from the outside, and they usually have a nice team under Ferentz. It'd be A LOT more enjoyable if their fans stayed out of the way.
ISU has a long ways to go for consistency....but, if it can be done at Iowa...

all kidding aside, there would be a lot of Iowa fans (mainly because they're tavern hoks) that won't let this game end just because it's the biggest reason they're on the bandwagon.

The Big 10 is "traditionally" a second-rate football conference outside of two, maybe three schools. One outright title since 1968.
Iowa State has always played a harder schedule than Iowa and always will, and Iowa will always put more money into their program than ISU, and they always will. For these two reasons Iowa should be (and is) better than ISU in this sport.
If there ever was a drastic change in conference realignment where schools were assorted geographically and ISU decided this was the time to put more money into the football program, eventually ISU would catch up with Iowa, in my opinion.
ISU is putting more money into the program (SEZ renovations), but while ISU is getting better, so is everyone else. It's going to take an external change (conference realignment or something even bigger) for ISU to become sustainably good at football.
With the way things are going for the NCAA, I could see that external change coming soon.

Every year we beat the Hawks is like an entire year of no sunshine to a Hawk fan. As long as we win the last game before they cancel the series; I am fine with it. Then the Hawk fans would have to spend the rest of their lives without sunshine!:yes:
If it was only about pumping money into a program to make it better, Iowa's overall athletic department would be fairing much better than ISU's on the field.
Given the results, this just isn't the case. Stating the obvious, but a lot of it has to do with the people in charge. Right now, at Iowa, Barta is great at pulling in money, horrible at maintaining competitive non-revenue programs.
So which is it Split?? One post you state that it would be a bold statement to say Iowa football will always be better considering the history then in the next post state that the programs havent really been comparable... those two statement are rather conflicting of one another.
Uhhh.... they haven't been comparable. But I'm not a fortune teller, so I can't look into a crystal ball and tell you Iowa will always be better. I fell like what I'm saying is pretty straight forward, but maybe it's not.
Didn't Iowa just pump a bunch of money into a new scoreboard screen and ribbon boards along with a brand new football practice/weight/office facility? It's not like they aren't dropping tons of money too.
IMO, with no major pro teams, the Squakeye-Cyclone intrastate battle is just too big to let go. It creates more interest than any other non-conference match-up by far, along with a lot of revenue. No matter where the game is played, it's a guaranteed sell-out, and in especially in Ames, the tailgating is fantastic!! If we continue to improve, as I believe we will, the game will also create more interest nationwide, increasing TV revenue possibilities on that front, as well.

I know right, conflicting statements can be hard for mouth breathing, knuckle dragging Hok fans to grasp. Its ok take your time.
In your supreme intellect, could you possibly explain to this simpleton (that graduated from ISU with honors) how the two statements are conflicting? Is stating that up until this point, the two football programs are not comparable somehow conflicting with the idea that said statement is not set in stone and can change in the future? Isn't that what the majority of Cyclone fans want?
Please use small words and include a diagram so I can keep up.
