CW POD: Tom Manning

Campbell has only won one conference opener (TCU in 2020) since he got here. These slow starts carry into the conference play as well.

It's usually game 5 or the second conference game when ISU flips a switch: new QB/3-3-5 D in 2017, Purdy first game in 2018, 'just go out and have fun' mantra of TCU 2019, etc.

It's an interesting trend.

I mean I don't remember the last time we dominated a non con team other than UNLV and ULM, which by the way are two of the worst FBS programs around....in 2019 we went to triple OT with a mediocre UNI even by FCS standards, and they had a chance to win on their final drive in 2021....it's absurd that we've come this far as a program but still have early season scares against far inferior opponents

Score wise 2017 vs. UNI was dominant although that took a couple of defensive TDs iirc.

I'll put 2017 and 2021 in the underachieving category looking at the personnel available. I know 2017 things were still 'new' but that was the best collective receiving core ISU's had available and it wasn't nearly as utilized as could have been imo.

Rating a group of guys that had never been to a bowl game as underachieving, after winning 8 games, seems quite harsh. 2021 and 2019 were the poorest coached seasons I've seen from Campbell and Co. And that's still winning 7 with a program that is a historic bottom dweller

Why? That’s the way it is.

We have the second best conference record in the big 12 over the last 5 years. We are one of only a handful of teams in the country with a winning conference record for 5 years straight.

Losing to Iowa and struggling in week 1 is the price we pay for that.
SEMO lost their first 3 games by a combined 95 points last year. We really need to get the slow start monkey off our backs this fall.

Would be great to have a boring, methodical game where we're resting starters the entire 4th quarter (for good reason).

I'm not referring to the players. The players played their asses off.

There were two wins left on the table that year.

2019 ISU was overvalued as was last season.

I know a coach who was an OC at the D3 level and now he is a head high school coach. It's not just some of us that have been critical of Manning, this guy was too. Some things he specifically commented on is he couldn't believe our route trees in some of our games and how slow we were to make adjustments to what the other team was doing.

Obviously we want more in depth content. Curtail the content to what listeners want. Pretty simple

Here's the thing. With Manning, I knew I could only push so far before it turned into coach speak city. He's not going to give away game plan changes and secrets in June. He's just not. So I went another direction to squeeze as much juice out of the orange as I could.

If that's how you read the situation, then you're right. Wouldnt surprise me either, the staff love their coach speak

I am wrong more often than right but I believe I got this one correct. I thought Tom was awesome. Gave us a ton of great insight. I learned a lot about his process.
Give yourself some credit. I definitely think you're right way more than you are wrong. I should have known getting information out of this staff is much more difficult than I was thinking. I did love Tom's Straight to it attitude, and definitely think he gave us more to chew on than we've been given in the past from hearing him speak. Thanks for the pod and your response!

not sure about games like this, how well they get us ready. ULM was a cake walk, I don't think it helped us sharpen up as a football team, maybe built a little confidence. It sure padded our stats though. As did UNLV.

Who knows? Maybe that's what the team needs before heading into rivalry week. Honestly, with some of them having lost 4 games to Iowa they can't be brimming with confidence going into that game.

SEMO is not UNI. And they are not going to have that in-state little bro element either. Iowa State should put up 40+ and win by 3 or more scores.

I'm no expert, but it seems like there is something to be said about pushing too much and reading where that line is.

Gosh, they lost four times to Iowa. Oh, gee. Gosh darn.

They’ve also beaten Oregon, Texas and Oklahoma in that span, and went toe to toe with Clemson. Iowa is small peanuts in comparison.

I don’t think that “confidence” is going to be an issue.

This will be a Cyclone team with a bunch of new starters. I’m fine with a cupcake to let them get settled in.

Real up & comer. :)

Hey @ClonesInDallas?

I simply meant that the players have plenty of reason for confidence in themselves. I wasn’t addressing whether or not they have confidence they can beat that particular team.

I apologize for not being clearer.

For that matter, Iowa may be “brimming with confidence” that they can beat us…or they may not. In either case, I think our players confidence in themselves and their teammates may trump that.

After all, I do remember when Iowa’s fifteen game win streak was broken. That Cyclone team had confidence in themselves.
