*** COACHING SEARCH THREAD: Monday, June 8 ***

SFA has 3 NCAA tournament appearances and is 1-3 record in four games. Underwood has two of those — in the previous two seasons — and has a 1-2 record. Only other NCAA appearance for SFA came in 2009, so it’s not like he piggybacked on recent success.

SFA has six postseason appearances in NCAA + NIT (combined record: 2-6).

SFA is one of only four Southland schools to win at least one game in the NCAA tournament. Lamar (4-2, with a Sweet 16 appearance), New Orleans and Northwestern State are the other 3. NW State is the only other Southland school to win a tournament game since the 1980s.

Is Underwood the right guy? Maybe not. A larger sample size at HC would be preferable.

Wasn't Fred's salary his first year in the 850k range? If Otz gets the job I can't see him making any more than Fred did his first year. Incentives would allow for more though and let's hope who ever gets the job makes a ton of money on those.

Sounds like a team Iowa State would play in pre conference games and win by 50 points while resting their starters like they did in a game with Mississippi Valley State last season. The bench even played more minutes than the starters in that game.

Put that coach in another conference with even one step up in competition and I think you would see a big difference in the coaches winning percentage.

Tom Crean cannot be mystery candidate if the deal will be public by mid week, even if he wants out of Bloomington. He has an $8 million dollar buyout (!!!!) until the third anniversary of his current deal, which would be June 30. At that point, anyone who would hire Crean would owe UI just $1 million.

I can't find out any hard numbers on the Tony Bennett deal, but the buyout is upwards of $1.2 million if the terms are the same as his previous deal, which they probably arent...

Can't find anything on Dixon, except he's signed through 2023 and a buyout is referenced.

With previous rumors saying donors want Tom Crean out, I wouldn't be surprised if the university was willing to lessen the buy out. That said, I highly doubt it'll be Tom but I would be happy if it was him.
 
Sorry, but I had a really busy Saturday and Sunday and haven't been able to keep up. Why am I hearing a bunch of names now on top of the four that we initially thought would be the only ones interviewed? I'm seeing Dixon, Moton, Bennett (please, for the love of God, no. his stagnant and slow coaching style would ruin this years squad), Wright, and a few others now. Can someone please fill me in?

Says the guy running @CycloneInsiders on twitter. I sure hope the interviews with Andy Enfield, Mike Anderson, Gregg Marshall, and Jamie Dixon went well. SMH!

Summary? I'll give it a shot.
Moton from NCC was a fifth interview that took place in Atl this weekend for the job. It was reported there are 2 mystery canidates that he has heard of that are big enough names that both would cost 3M+ one of which closer to 4. Also rumored one of the two may have removed his name but due to sensitivity of the info his sources are closing ranks so it is unconfirmed. Both mystery guys would require a 3+ million it would have to be a name coach from a power 5 conference or Marshall/Miller/Mack most likely possibilities. Leath is more in favor or paying that high of a price than Pollard as of last week. TJ is still considered the slight favorite but, Underwood is gaining momentum. CW expects an announced decision coming by Tuesday/Wednesday.

Of course this all lead to ~20 pages rapid CF speculation of what coach would fit and Pollard being cheap and TJ being a valid candidate or not or just same arguments the past 5 days argument on the board. :swoon:

I would think if an offer of any kind based off this weekend's interviews is going out to a coach employed elsewhere, we are going to begin hearing rumblings about it by the end of the day today or sometime tomorrow.

I like Underwood's resume. Basically he is TJ plus 2 seasons of highly successful low major head coaching. The only problem I struggle with is in some of his pictures he resembles Mcdermott and he is always screaming. Ok, I know that is very shallow but the emotional scars from McD's era still linger.
