Coaching Prospects

I really think Strong would consider coming here. If he's dumped at Texas he will have had his opportunity at a high profile Job. Honestly I don't think he has failed there either. Mack left a dumpster fire for him to clean up in terms of discipline and culture. Maybe he would consider a place at this time that he will be given a long leash and still in a p5 program.

There is zero chance of Charlie Strong coaching here.

Never said that. I said We will find out. Which we will. Pretty obvious you have no recollection of the 2004 football season. That team was only 2-4 at the beginning of the year. Using your judgement we would have pulled the trigger and fired DMac immediately. That team ended up finishing 7-5 with a bowl win. The lone loss in the last 6 games was 17-14 loss to Mizzou in OT.

And THAT is why you let the season play out. We will know at some point.

Your signature line shows your obvious bias.

Do you think if were 19-5 instead of 5-19 over the past two years that would be my signature line? I'm not biased, I just choose not to ignore reality.

You...aren't very bright, are you?

I am sure JP has a list in his desk.

I have heard JP has been keeping in touch with Charlie Partidge, former ISU, Wisconsin, and Arkansas position coach who is in his first head coaching job at Florida Atlantic. Inherited a dumpster fire and trying for a turnaround in his second year.

This is the kind of fit that JP likes. A guy he knows, who's paid his dues, been around ISU and knows what it is all about here.

The problem is, that knowing what ISU is about and relating to the fans is only part of the equation, and to me it is a very small part. Any new coach has to be a better recruiter than what we have been getting. He has to figure out how to promote the university and the culture of the football program to these kids so that they will want to come and play for ISU not just because they didn't get a better offer elsewhere.

We will find out. We just had a loss to Iowa. Scratch Mangino from the list of possible replacements. And I do not want Bohl. I watched DMac get more time after the debacle in 2003. Second half of the Iowa game reminded me of DMac's offense in 2003. They were atrocious. That was a 2-10 season in Year #9. And we had 4 non-conference games and played in the Big 12 North.
No telling. Different coach might have done better in 2004 and 2005. We will never know. It's still really dumb though to compare that situation with the current one.

utah states matt wells should be a candidate for a bigger job very soon.

If what Die4Cy said is true, CP is a very good recruiter.

Tom Herman....
Is this realistic? Would he even come here? He was able to escape into one of the best Asst Coaching gigs and then soon after a head coaching position. I doubt he would sacrifice all of his serendipity to come back to ISU where good coaches fester and die.

I still am very supportive of CPR and the current staff; but, if by the end of the season it is apparent that a new direction is needed then I would really like us to go after Willie Fritz (at Georgia Southern).

Brad Zelenovich would be a great hire and would know all the coaches around the state to aid in recruiting.

Just curious what kind of season for you would warrant a change?

I think ISU must do something drastic if a coaching change is made. The spread will not work at ISU. Iowa high schools don't run much spread so the few recruits that come here are starting over. We need to run a pro style or I form of offense big bruising traditional rbs. Slows down the game and gives the defense time to rest. We will never have the speed of the southern schools we play so let's slow it down and give ourselves a chance to win. Dumb question maybe; but why has nobody gone after a Kansas state coach. Nobody does more with less than the white wizard at Kansas state.

I will bet you right now we end up with a better season than 2-10. Are you willing to take that bet? Name your price.

You apparently didn't read my post, and no I won't take that bet because I agree we will do better than 2-10. We had a 3-9 year, a 2-10 year, and whatever we get this year. Mac had a 2-10 year and a "you're fired" to follow your logic. You were trying to use Mac as an example of a bad year late. Yes, he had a bad year late, came back with 2 good years, then one bad year and he was gone. Rhoads is staring 3 bad years in a row in the face.

Totally agree! I love the idea of having the "Iowa State guy", but let's face it - have we EVER been elite in football? So, we have no one who has been a part of a successful Iowa State football culture, or at least one that we would strive for. Don't we want someone to come in and try to change the paradigm? People might say we tried that with Chizik, but come on, he was a guy who didn't want to be here in the first place and showed at Auburn that he wasn't good head coaching material even there (his NC notwithstanding although that team was mostly inherited and people give Malzahn all the credit). We DO need a guy who, while he might not want to be here forever, is fully invested in the community while he is here and brings other experiences to the table.

Who are the Urban Meyer disciples available for hire? Sign me up for one. That guy is easily the best coach in college football right now and it's not close.

Because results matter, and JP's job is hiring coaches who have success not making splash hires.

If only he had the benefit of hindsight OR the budget to get the sure-thing the first time. Rhoads wasn't necessarily a bad hire - he took us to a bowl game 3 of his first 4 years. Pollard can't foresee nor should he try to control who his coach will hire as an OC in his 4th year.

McDermott and Chizik didn't have enough time to know how they would pan out. Greg's record at ISU isn't too much different than Johnny's. Who knows how things might have gone if he had a little more time?

We won't get a better AD than Pollard.

Look last Saturday sucked in the second half, but we will regroup and hopefully beat Toledo. I'm sorry but we r just not on the radar for an awesome coaching gig here, could it happen sure, but history tells the tale as of now. The Iowa game doesn't define our season.

We hit a home run with Fred. Does such a hire exist in football?

One observation? Fred went for transfers and JUCOs right out of the gate. He had a plan and stuck to it. After 5-6 years, football is going after the JUCOs. It's too late. Too many years have passed since the early success and the bowl appearances. All the early momentum was lost. It's time for a change, before the season ends, not after the season.
