Hell, even if Chizik had used us as a more traditional stepping stone, that would have been fine. His first 2 years sucked, but the talent was there to give Rhoads his best year, and more and more i believe Chizik would have done at least that well in years 3-4.
This. People hate to admit chizik was a splash hire and is responsible for recruiting almost every player we have in the nfl right now
That is on the next coach, even more so in this context of stepping stones. And in this case, Chizik did his part. He passed on a line full of maulers.I don't question we got one decent season out of the deal, I would have liked to see the foundation be laid for something sustainable.
Gene needs a job....:wideeyed:Remember...
This is the AD that consults with Big 12 refs and looks for a "man of faith" during coaching searches (no offense to Prohm).
If Pollard were to fire Rhoads (assuming another missed bowl game), I'm not really sure the replacement will be much different in the long run. Since there is no Top 5 talent in place like the basketball team, it will end up being some sort of "named" coach a la Chizik but without the attitude. It may sell tickets for a season or two but no guarantee of any meaningful amount of success.
Anyone hoping for Tom Herman (the guy we all celebrated for leaving as OC) is probably out of luck. Houston is a great mid-major job that can land him in a Top 10 Power 5 job within a few years. Unless he really loves Ames or wants to jump to Power 5 quickly, we will be out of luck. On top of that, I think there may be some burned bridges there.
Wait. So, Chizik failed at Auburn with like, Auburn talent, but would have progressed at ISU with slightly better than average ISU talent?
I wish I had that confidence. I'm more confident in JP not being able to make the right decision because of his loyalty to his coaches in general and more specifically his friendship with CPR.

I want a coach who wants to use Iowa State as a stepping stone. And that doesn't mean Gene Chizik.
Why the lack of trust in JP's hiring? This would be his only hire that didn't work out.
Are u guys really trying to talk yourself into thinking one of the biggest ****** in ISU history was really great and should coach again? I'd rather have Pelini
For the record, he did go 8-5, 14-0, 8-5, and then 3-9 and went 3-0 in bowl games. He only really had one bad season at Auburn.
To be fair, 8-5 isnt really a good year at auburn.
The most important thing is to ditch the spread. We have tried three different coordinators and have never had a very productive offense. We have had a running game since ARob graduated. Time to go back to an I-Formation, drop back passing attack. It has worked here in the past.
We need to do something different than everyone else. The entire conference runs the spread. When the other guys have competitive advantages, it's time to innovate and/or differentiate.
I hope this means you are confident we are going to win a lot of games the rest of the way. I might think you're crazy but at least it would mean you don't think we are going to hang on to a guy after his sixth straight losing season.
