Coaching Change

Ouch this one would hurt a lot. Campbell having 3 OC in 4 years.. hard to develop an offense.

Really hoping this is just smoke

Not really, that's just the old ISU excuse for bad offenses and why mediocre QB's didn't develop into Heisman candidates. Hopefully we are past that phase of ISU football history. It's not like we signed kids to run a wishbone and are now going to switch to a pro style set.

Why would TM leave as P5 OC under his Mentor at his age and uproot his family to go be an Asst in NFL? Not a coordinator but an asst. I mean i would get this move if TM were an asst at Toledo making 90k a year but this doesnt seem like a good move for TM.

Talk about leaving your BFF and Mentor (CMC) in a rough postion and all those kids he recruited in the 16 and 17 OL class who were about to start seeing the field...Ugg.

I mean i guess Hoefner as OC would be fine but what is more concerning to me is OL coach.

Campbell has coached OL his entire career. Promote Hofher to OC and he has plenty of guys familiar with his OL philosophy

Aren't both him and his wife's family from Ohio? Even though he'll uproot his family to move to Indy, they'll probably be moving closer to family. NFL Asst job on his resume will be nice if he ever wants to get back into college coaching at any major football programs, too.

Manning also turned his twitter to private, so we'll see what kind of news breaks.

Because the NFL is at the top of the game.

This would be a bummer. If true it Makes getting Kempt for another year even bigger though

But some jobs in the NFL are a step down from OC at a P5 school. I don't know what job he'd be getting in the NFL though? But as an example, Brian Ferentz has a much better job now as Iowa's OC than he did working for the Patriots.

Generally true, but also realize that college is a year round grind mainly because of recruiting. The NFL the offseason is ALOT more relax for coaches.

Totally agree with you on that. That's precisely why being a P5 OC is a more prestigious position than what some NFL jobs are.... and pays more too. There's more stress and more offseason work involved.

However, I have no idea what job Manning would be taking, so I can't say for sure that he's taking a step down or not? I'm guessing it's a move up for him.

Big loss but good for him. Colts have been losing ground in the AFC South the past few years and need all the help they can get.
Bright side, it's good to have connections in the NFL.

Not if you want to be a NFL coach. For example, his buddy and college teammate is now a first time OC (for the Colts). The Colts didn’t ask Manning to be OC, they asked his buddy who got there by coaching in the NFL and not tolling away in college having to spend time recruiting instead of perfecting his craft.

Actually, the ones that stay good still lose a lot of assistants. But their culture is such that they can sustain success despite it.

This will be a good measure of the culture that Campbell is building. When Rhoads had staff changes, he was not able to build high levels of trust with the new guys. And the program eroded from within.

Go back even further, the beginning of the end of McCarney started when his early staff started moving on/up. He couldn’t replace the outgoing talent with as good, or better, incoming talent. If the the culture is right, we will survive, and ultimately thrive.

Speaks to the true value of leadership. Besides, he could be a possible successor to CMC when that day comes. Let’s get him all the training / and development opportunities as possible.

We are all gun shy because of the turnover in CPRs coaches. Big difference here is, I'm guessing Campbell keeps the same player and scheme philosophy. CPR was all over the place with each change. Keeping things basically the same means a coach will be hired that is pretty similar and players will have a general comfort zone still.
