Coach Prohm Gets Extension

Because when you're trying to recruit players they need to believe that you will be here when you show up dummy.

Having different opinions makes you a dummy. Got it. Love how sanctimonious everyone is about prohm. You either love him or you’re an idiot, not a real fan, give up your season tix, etc.

It’s like you’re allowed to have one opinion on a message board

Glad prohm got an extension. He is a good recruiter, defensive coach, and he holds players accountable. I wish he'd stop hanging his tongue out though :)

I would fully expect Wigginton, and THT to declare and go through the process. If I was Prohm, I would encourage Halliburton, Lard, and Jacobsen to as well.
I agree on all but Jacobsen. I love the kid, but he plays like a big man but he's undersized. Not sure how well that plays in the NBA. I could be wrong.
With the others, I'm not sure why they wouldn't go through the process so they know what to work on for their futures. Then come back and dominate for us :-)

I just posted that I can see where someone is coming from but I didn't necessarily agree. There has been some respectful debate in this thread, and then some extremest on both sides. It's what message boards are.

I think we're locked in a bit longer than we ought to be with his limited growth so far.

I'm honestly not trying to pick a fight here, as despite our differences in opinion on Prohm I still think you're one of the better posters here, but what would you have done differently with the extension?

I’ll admit I have been a bit negative on Prohm. Still think we are headed in the right direction with the pieces we have. Excited to see Halliburton and Conditt grow. Agree with CW that those two seem to be cyclones through and through.

Just ask Barta

IMO everyone on the team should declare to get the outside feedback in order to improve their games. There’s no penalty for declaring to get feedback so they might as well do it.

Congratulations, Coach Prohm on your contract extension and raise. It's nice to have a successful coach and his family who love Ames, want to be here and are planning on being here a long time!

Let's go hire an offense minded assistant now. Let CSP handle recruiting and the defense but we need an offense genius to help with set plays, inbounds, etc. Then the sky is really the limit. Glad to see we locked him up.

Iowa State led the Big 12 in scoring offense this season and its offensive and defensive efficiency ratings were among the nation's best much of this season.

I could be absolutely wrong, but can’t you only declare once and come back? I didn’t think you could do it every year. And if you can only do it once and come back, did Wiggi do it last year?

While I’m admittedly not a huge Prohm fan, I know the program is best off giving him more time to do his thing. Even those who don’t love him have to admit he’s an elite evaluator of talent and a high level recruiter. Steve still has plenty of time to prove me wrong.

IMO our baseline expectation should be to make the NCAA tournament and be in the top half of the league.

Prohm has proved he can do that with the exception of the anticipated roster decline last year, and even then I think we could have competed for a tournament bid if the roster would have been 100% healthy all year.

This season was weird because we met the baseline expectations and even went on to win the conference tournament. At the beginning of the year I think everyone would have signed up for that. However by mid-season it looked like we'd have a real shot at the conference title. We slipped up at the end, but that doesn't mean Prohm is a terrible coach.

This team was one of the more dynamic ones we've had. We shot pretty well from 3 overall but it wasn't consist across games. We'd go 60% one game and 25% the next. That lack of consistency was the biggest issue IMO, and that's not all on the coach, sometimes good shooters just don't make shots, that seemed to happen to us a lot this year, barring THT's awful shot selection of course.

I absolutely love Coach Prohm. In fact a lot of the Prohm haters make me love him more.

But you are acting like what you are saying is some crazy take. I love Prohm and hope things work out and he is here forever.

But I also share your points of concern. Prohm absolutely needs to get better in-game. He's a humble dude and would probably admit that if asked right now. He can identify talent that is under the radar like Solomon Young and Tyrese Haliburton and pull in top talent like Wigginton and THT. I think he heads the program up the right way. I absolutely love what he has done bringing back older players each summer. I think even thought he is from the south, he represents Iowa values and fits in great with the feel of Iowa State.

But he absolutely needs to get better in other facets. I don't think even the most die hard Prohm fan would say he didn't. I think at times during games he should rely on more set plays especially when the guys are in a funk on offense. I think he should give more rope for some dudes to earn more time. Remember when we were all clamoring for Solomon Young over Merrill Holden? More Conditt this year? Giving those guys even just 2-3 minutes a half can do a whole lot for building down the road. He probably also shouldn't have such a long leash for some dudes. When THT jacks up a step back 3 and has only made 1 I believe all year, dude needs to come out of the game for some coaching. That type of hero/Iso ball isn't what was making this years team so good.

But even despite those things, I can still think he is a good coach and can get better. Look at how everyone use to crap all over Scott Drew 6-7 years ago. How he was a bad in-game coach. Could only recruit. Etc. Now I'd say Scott Drew is in the top half of the league and is a pretty good in-game coach. What he did this year with injuries is pretty crazy. Prohm is doing a lot of good and can and probably will get better where he is deficient.

^This. Good post.

I think everyone in the fan base shares the "points of concern" that some have on Prohm. He needs to get better at in-game adjustments, that's the big one for me. But make no mistake, ISU needed continuity here. If we had a coaching change this year, it most likely would have been disastrous. At the end of the day, ISU is really competitive and won the Big 12 tourney title again. ISU was ranked a lot during the season again. This all is good "pub" for the program and how new recruits currently see the program.

And honestly, I like that our fan base has two sides to this issue, it's called we actually ******* care and we put butts in the seats and want ISU to sustain this great success in the Basketball program. So, from time to time, we'll ***** about the coach. It's good to have other observations/points of view because we CARE. Imagine being at a place that doesn't give two *****? One side knows it would be incredibly stupid to change coaches right now after he has been to a Sweet 16 and won 2 Big 12 Tourneys. On the other side, people know what kind of talent this '18-'19 team had, and see the in-game mishaps not getting fixed. You care...I'm not going to yell at ya even if you say something dumb like "he's gotta go." (He's a young coach, and great at getting talent to Ames... he'll get better in-game regarding X's and O's.)

I love how the dude recruits. Now, clean up some things and get better and better and push ISU to new HIGHS. And get back to the 2nd weekend in the NCAA's! We all know ISU can do it because the fan base is awesome and will travel well... which is very helpful for a March run down the road. Coach Prohm knows this is a big-time job. WE WANT TO WIN MORE and get to the Final 4 and play for a championship. Our support is off the charts, so he knows pressure is involved at a place like ISU. It's his job to get ISU there/better. Just keep putting ISU in position coach!
