Coach Otz Needs More Technicals

For those complaining about TJ not getting on the refs, you need to go listen to what he was looking for in transfers. It's something called self-awareness. People in control of things don't react like toddlers when they don't get their way. Who are you more likely to listen to at your work? The guy who freaks out about stuff constantly or the guy who conversates with you?

That's great and all, but the fact is that the officials in college basketball and particularly those that the big 12 tends to employ, have shown they are swayable by coaches who are in their ear the whole game.

As a counter to what you're saying, when a ref is worried about being fair, if he has one guy who is livid and another guy that, due to lack of reaction, seems otherwise fine with things, it could be easy to subconsciously think that the calls have, so far, been in favor of the team who is fine with the calls... and then a shift is made.

TJ Otzelberger needs to get after the refs more often. The cross-arms side-eye ain't cutting it. Time to throw his arms up and maybe yell a little bit. The reffing vs. ISU this year has been atrocious.

Disagree. I think part of our composure (and toughness) has been developed by our guys not reacting to calls and carrying that on to the next play. TJ is the leader, so if he's composed, the guys follow suit.

Example: George had a tie up against WVU where the guy basically tried to rip it down and away pulling George over him. I thought it might be on. Nope, George just walked away expressionless. There's value in that too.

Campbell is pretty good at keeping his composure, but I would assume over time he will improve in that matter. Losing your **** doesn't do anything, when refs **** up, they are aware they ****** up. Yelling at them doesn't change that.

Once again, everyone wants to use the Fran McCafe crazy as working a ref. You can work a ref by pointing out bad calls and disagreeing with their calls and saying what you saw happen. You don’t have to go beserk but how many times does self, Weber and others point to calls that they felt were wrong and a couple trips down the floor they start getting that call?

I'd like to see data about swaying refs with screaming at them.

Regarding your counter, if you think coaches are content with bad calls, you'd be wrong. You can talk in a civil manner and let the refs know what you're seeing. There have been many times TJ is talking to the refs. I've seen it plenty of times where he talks to them during timeouts.

Is the reffing good? No, but it's terrible across the country. If I were a ref, I'd be more concerned about fans than coaches. Coaches have a hell of a lot of discipline than the fans.

I think too many people are basing things on how a coach physically looks when he is talking to a ref vs what is actually being said. TJ looks in control, many do not.

I've seen T.J. working the refs during less volatile times in the game. For instance, after the game was over, he was talking to Kelly Self. I'm guessing T.J. said something like "We bailed you out on that inadvertant whistle and the five-second calls. If we lose this game, I would be going after your job." Both walked away with awkward smiles.

I just prefer the Matt Campbell approach. Stay calm but a couple times a game, you let the ref know he totally screwed up and owes you a make up call.

Based on the reactions from my initial post, I guess most people are satisfied with taking it in the rear every game.

Or many of us don’t think giving up free points when this team is already on a thin margin to hope officials will get emotionally and react positively to said coach blowing his lid. All to placate the fan base. No thanks.

Players are a reflection of their coach. If the coach is freaking out then so will the players. Would you rather have your players focusing on the bad call that happened or shake it off and focus on the next possession? I know which one I choose.

Agree. And we don’t really know what TJ is saying when talking to the refs. He very well may be getting his point across without looking like a screaming lunatic

If I was the ref and 1 coach has throwing a fit and the other would talk to me in a calm, respectful manner, I’m favoring the calm one. I’d be especially picky on the other just because they’re being an ass. Maybe that’s just me.
