Coach Hoiberg: Call-In Show Comments

Allow me to reminisce alittle about the Okie State game. First off, I think the starters for ISU were: Hoiberg, Thigpen, Bayless, Meyer, Julius. Okie State was: Houston, Sutton, Alexander, Reeves, and I'm forgetting #5 for them???

Secondly wasn't Alexander the free-throw shooter for Okie State late in the game(Alexander was like a 90 percent shooter) when Hilton was going crazy? What a game Coach!! Can't wait til we get back to those kind of thrilling endings at Hilton with Hoiberg at the helm.

I was a member of the pep band for that game. Lordy it was loud. Alexander must have thought he was shooting free throws from a Tilt-A-Whirl. No wonder he missed them.

As I recall, OSU went into the game ranked #2, but whoever was #1 had just been beaten. So to us, we'd just beaten #1.

Which Big 8 championship game was it? The year we got beat by "Big Country" and Okie State or when we beat Kansas in the last Big 8 tourney championship? Just curious.

Big Country. I forgot just how big he was as well.

Aaaand wow, it appears Byron Houston is now a registered sex offender:

Wow, he's got a serious problem:

Houston's prior offenses
Wednesday wasn't the first time Byron Houston had been arrested for indecent exposure. A quick look at his prior offenses:
•Sept. 30, 2001: Arrested after several women reported seeing Houston masturbating on his apartment balcony.

•May 28, 2002: Arrested after he was seen masturbating through a window.

•Aug. 30, 2002: Arrested after a woman reported seeing Houston masturbating in his vehicle.

•March 4, 2003: After pleading guilty to four counts of indecent exposure, he received a suspended sentence and was ordered to undergo treatment.

Is he blind yet? If not, my mom is full of crap

The Oky State game was before the students just jumped up and down yelling OHHHHHHHH when the other team had the ball. The students basically just got loud and crazy. Totally different enviroment. It wasn't forced cheers it was just loud. Somewhere along the line it was lost. Not sure if we can get it back. The first thing we have to do is to quit copying Duke.

Why are so many people so observant of this guy? It seems like he was just having a good time in his own house/balcony and got hassled for no good reason. :parghh:

That Okie State game was amazing... also one of my favorites of all-time. That game epitomized Hilton Magic. I still have that game on a VHS tape somewhere. Might have to break it out and relive the old days for a night.
My worst nightmare....... I left early and had to listen on the radio. The only thing worse was missing only 1 home FB game in 92. You can guess which 1. I went to the Mall of America instead.(the wife still owes me some favors for that 1).

I remember that day well. I got married after the game in Ames. We were watching it at the back of the church while my mother in law was getting nervous.

I was in the first row behind the basket for the Okie State game. I kept yelling CBA, CBA to Byron Houston. I thought he was going to squash me like bug...LOL. He was HUGE!

What the heck is wrong with cheering this this manner? I guess the 'younger' generation can't do ANYTHING right, the old days were ALWAYS better than now. What a bunch a crap.

Taking it a little personal??

Hey it was a great game. We haven't had any like that for quite a while. I think that's all they're saying. When's the last time we had an oppossing coach comment on how the floor was skaking in Hilton?

Maybe after's it's been said once, there's no need for later coaches comment the same thing. But don't mind me, didn't want to break up 'holier than thou' monotony that infests the old generation around here

The way I remember it, Thigpen didn't start the game. He was benched at the start (for the first half?) after telling Johnny in the huddle during the previous game "Your **** ain't workin' Coach."

I think you are right. Thigpen didn't play for the first 6 or 7 minutes to start the game.

If you can think of a louder way to cheer for an entire game other than yelling OHHHHHH at the top of your lungs, let me know. I was in school from 2002-2007, and believe me, I felt the floor shake too. EDIT: It was probably the students jumping up and down, not the noise though.

To quote Wayne Morgan, "Our crowd, in big games, has come out of the stands and onto the court and breathed energy into our guys while causing difficulty in functioning for the opposition." Not quite floor shaking, but still notable.

But seriously, what did you all do when nothing was happening on the court?

I'm in my 30's, so I'm probably about in the middle around here....I'm with you on this, there is alot of unnecessary trashing of the college students around here, and unfairly so. Keep it up, you're doing fine.

I think the old "magic" was three parts: Johnny's personality, the up-tempo style we played, and the mixture of older and younger fans in the parque. I think winning with an uptempo style will do alot to get the magic back, but we are a bit hampered by the current seating arrangements...its just not as good of a setup. And JO was classic too, so I guess we'll have to overcome that as well.

I'd add another part. ISU Men's basketball in the mid 80's to early 2000's was THE event at ISU. Think about it. Football was bad for the majority of this time frame, Fennelly started to turn Wball around the 2000....since then fans have had mor than onechoice to spend their time, energy and money. But for so long ISU hoops is where the majority of the fan base could hang their hat.

Times are different now....

I am a member of the old guard, always lived out of state and unable to attend games. I would say I have listened to about 90% of the games since the mid 90's. With no offense intended to the younger generation, it is not even close to the way Hilton was. Perfectly understandable, we have had bad teams that weren't fun to watch. But back in the day you could barely hear Pete and Eric for much of the games in Ames. I can hear it now, Pete screaming just to be heard over the crowd. Freddie scores the last 17 points for us to beat ku. I was going crazy as Pete would yell "Hoiberg for 3.......GOOD AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Cannot wait for that again.

The poor teams have indeed had a big effect. I do think the seating arrangement has taken away alot of the enthusiasm though. Yes placing all the higher donors courtside makes us more money. But, alot of the lower bowl sucks and that includes most of all the older generation. Back in the day, since students were intersperced in the lower bowl amongst the older ticketholders/donors the donors were forced to stand up and cheer. Now, I bet if you stood up and cheered in those sections you would probably be asked to sit down so the other lazy fans can watch the game while sitting on there ***. Nothing frustrates me more than fans that ask other fans to sit down while at a sporting event.
