CBB Today

I'm pretty much in CBB mode now, too. I did watch a little of that D-II championship, though —*exciting finish. Delta State has kinda cool helmets.

Back to basketball: UIC defeated Illinois

I like both CFB & CBB, although I like CBB better. You're probably the polar-opposite of me, but in a similar way. A lot of people I know can watch any bowl game just because they like to watch football. I'm a little like that during CFB regular season, but by late December I become that way w/ CBB — I can tune in to almost any college basketball game, no matter the matchup, and watch it (there are exceptions — such as games involving Wisconsin).

Earlier today, I had a half-hour of viewing time and had a choice of BYU-UTEP in New Mexico Bowl, or ATM vs. Arkansas MBB. I honestly am not that interested in ATM basketball or the significance of that one game, but I watched maybe 2 plays of the NMBowl and the rest of the time I watched the bball game.
 
I hope, for the sake of everyone's eyes, that nobody is watching the K-State game. Ugliest game I've seen in a long time.
 
I never understood how KSU was ranked in the top 5. They have Jacob Pullen and not much else to warrent a top 5 ranking. Even Pullen is overrated.

Edit: Haha, I wrote this all before I looked up the score. Wow, I'm glad I didn't watch that game. That had to be worst than our game vs. UNI.

USC was rated 1 or 2 spots better than Cal in the preseason rankings. I thought Kansas was the clear cut Big 12 favorite, and I still do, but this just shows the Big 12 is way down this year. Kansas is the top (been good, not great). Baylor, KSU, Texas, and Missouri are the next tier (not very impressive). Then A&m and OSU (about as expected). 8-12 are bad, We might be the eighth best team (not very impressive).

I think at this point you have to give the nod to A&M as one of the top 4 teams. They have looked better than I thought they would.
 
Watching all these games, I'm starting to feel better about our chances to compete in the B12 this year. If our guys stick together, I think the only reason we get blown out by any team is if we have an off shooting nite. If we had next years talent on the floor this year, I could see us challenging for a B12 championship with the way these teams are looking thus far.
 
I saw a lot of preseason experts picking KSU to win the Big 12 and potentially as a 1 seed in the tournament.

It could still happen, sure, but Kansas is usually a safer bet. I'm sure KSU got a lot more attention by having such a good season last year. But it seemed to ignore roster continuity.

I'm starting to really think ISU has more winnable Big 12 games this season than we might expect. Doesn't mean we'll see a 10-6 record — I simply don't think we're facing an automatic sweep vs. KSU and Missouri, or that a few road wins will be unlikely.

It's less a matter of this team being top-notch, but the opponents aren't Mount Everest.
 
I like our chances more and more too, but we still are going to struggle against these teams because we simply do not have the depth to compete night in and night out.

I'm still realistic about limitations — depth, experience, inside presence (and, so far, a reeeeeeally weak schedule) — but I also don't feel like the weaknesses eliminate contention in games here & there in the underdog role.

I think there's a feeling we'll get exposed as something far below what the W-L results show so far, and it will be evenly across the board — I feel like we'll get boot-kicked several times, and I'm still not reaching much higher than my 5-11 preseason guess. But for example, one of those five was ISU over Baylor in Hilton, which I think looks more and more likely all the time.
 
I know it's not against a quality opponent, but I think Mizzou is having a statement game, up 50+ points late in the 2nd. a lot of people have been asking if they are overrated or not. and it could be argued either way.
 
Selby looked....good. USC doesn't qualify as "great", so there isn't much to tell. I will point out that ISU lost to Drake the year we made the Elite Eight and won 18 in a row. Until the first round of conference is over, no one knows what anyone else has.
