Canker Sores

Listerine always works for me. Besides swishing it around in your mouth, just let it set on the affected areas for several minutes. Stress always caused mine and other than a shot of vodka or whiskey nothing else seem to ease the pain.

I use this OTC medication called Xylactin. You dry the area and put this gel on the sore, which coats it with a protective film, which really cuts down on the pain. It's a little tedious to put on, but does the trick.

I get these about a couple times a year when I get stressed... definitely suck. They really, really suck. They are a form of herpes and you can get valtrex to eliminate them, but of course you have to fill an STD medication then.

Warm salt water will relieve the pain for a while but I don't know if it helps get rid of them any faster.

As mentioned previously the second part of your explination is wrong canker sores are not equal to herpes. Most of the time they are stress related for me at least, but occasionally if I accidentally injure the inside of my mouth(bite or when i was younger braces rubbing) they'll appear in that spot as well.

Yeah, thats how I get mine most of the time as well. Whenever I bite my lip or tongue real bad, I can almost always expect a sore to appear within a day or so.

Sounds like that would burn like a son of a ***** if it's anything like pickles.

Alum does hurt pretty badly, but it works pretty well. It makes them look a little weird, though.

I've had pretty good luck with an OTC medicine called Glyoxide. It's more of an oral rinse than anything else, but if you apply it directly to the canker sore, it will foam up and clean it really well. Just don't swallow it - it tastes awful.

So, its also a common cold remedy?!?! Killing two birds with one stone, I like it! Especially, since I have a cold right now, haha. Does Hydrogen Peroxide taste bad or is it tasteless? I know, you don't swallow it, but can you taste it in your mouth?

There's really not a taste, but it foams up quite a bit which is kind of wierd, but pretty easy to get used to for the benefits.

Next time you go to the store.............buy some ALUM, it's in the spices section. It used to can pickles. Put some of that on the sore. I PROMISE it will work.............I've won some bets on it.
I have some in my cupboard, the only time it gets used is for canker sores.

Give it a try.........it'll work!

GOOD LUCK-
I SECOND THIS. It absolutely does work and FAST.

If you get canker sores all the time, switch to a toothpaste like Sensodyne. Doctor suggested this for someone I knew who had them all the time and hasn't had one since.

Soak a cotton ball in vegatble oil and hold on canker sore for several minutes. This coats the area and keeps mouth acids from getting to canker sore, this promotes faster healing.

Take 1-2 grams of the amino acid Lysine, 2-3 times per day. Cannot overdose. Will clear these cankers up in 2-3 days. Pain will start going away also. Lysine tabs are available many places that sell vitamins.

I used to get canker sores quite a bit, but about a year ago, I started taking L-Lysine tablets daily. Now I almost never get sores, and when I do (usually after biting the inside of my lip) they're small, mild and heal quickly.

Might be placebo effect for all I know, but it works for me.

They say,"An ounce of prevention is worth of pond of cure"...

so don't lick stripper poles.

But both the saltwater or peroxide and water are good remedies in my experience.

My mom always said you got canker sores from lying. We must have alot of liers on here. Maybe this belongs on the other thread about things you were told that weren't true.

My dentist told me some toothpastes have preservatives that can cause canker sores for some people. Aquafresh triple used to give them to me very regularly. I switched and it definitely got rid of them.

There have been some very good suggestions on here and all work to varying degrees. I've struggled with these damn things forver and I have never found that one thing that was a foolproof solution but many of the suggestions on here are good.

Changing toothpaste does seem to make a difference in frequency, Alum can reduce pain after use, over the counter pain liquids/pastes help for a short time and rinsing is also good. I do like things like Xylactin which someone else mentioned that creates a film over the sore but the only downside is it seems impossible not to try to bother it and get the film off. Lysine is also a great idea as many dentists/doctors recommend it. Also if you go see someone sometimes they will prescribe this stuff they call "Magic Mouthwash" which is a combination of things including benadryl to numb your mouth, seems to promote healing pretty well. So overall best suggestion is to try a number of these things and see what works well for you.

I would also like to echo previous posts that canker sores have absolutely nothing to do with any form of herpes. Not much is known medically about their cause other than they are not believed to be contagious. Good luck with the cure, everyone hates these damn things.

Quit making out with the girls that have the visible herpes???

Actually, I have bad canker sores at times, as well. My wife told me to gargle a small amount of hydrogen peroxide (straight). It has worked on my most recent one.

+1 on the Lysine. As soon as I even start to feel a cold sore come on my lip, I start takeing Lysine pills 3 - 4 times a day. When I get a cold sore, the dang thing is there on my lip for about a week and a half. So embarassing and painful. Lysine pills are worth it and to put it simply, THEY WORK!
