Caleb Grill has been dismissed from team

The question is if you change the response based on the fact that the kid was struggling and was not himself?

I don’t know. The way Iowa State worded the press release and the way Caleb’s statement read, it sort of comes across as a pretty unforgivable thing. That’s why there’s been speculation about it being a racial thing.

But I’ve read a few things that make it sound like it wasn’t quite at that level. If the decision was inevitable, it’s too bad Iowa State couldn’t have said he left the team for personal reasons. Caleb could have released his statement and then it wouldn’t have been so jarring.
The staff followed every correct logical and moral protocol. Absolutely nothing “sudden” about this situation. It came to this point because it had to, because every single domino, every single opportunity for the situation to escalate to the point where Iowa State had to release the statement that it did when that it did - unfortunately - fell into place. It is what it is.

I wish Grill and his family all the best. Also, really excited about that team rallying for a late season push.

That's hilarious generational stuff there. Cheating is at the heart of many championships, almost certainly here at ISU, too. You're just naive enough to think it's a "younger generation" thing when it's been at the heart of sports and everything else as long as there have been sports and everything else.
Agreed, but I think one can have some standards as to lines that should not be crossed. There should be a Briles Line and a Sandusky Line, for example.

I'm sure some will disagree with my position that winning at any and all costs should not be the goal.

With the timing of his dismissal I wonder if he made some sort of threatening comment in the heat of the moment. This may have caused the coaches/team decide that to make everyone feel safe he could no longer be involved with the team.

Punch holes in the story? Lol that is what happened. He was given the option to leave on his own, but he chose not to. And the straw that broke the camels back wasn’t a racial thing

I mean that story does not make a ton of sense to me.

I can’t quite figure out how they got from point A to point B without some sort of off ramp.

I’ll never know the whole story. 99.9% of this board won’t either.

More than likely. But, again, none of us know for certain.

This wasn’t a one time thing..it has been going on for the majority of the season and consistently escalated.

Oh, absolutely. There shouldn't even be Baylor or Penn State teams anymore.
I'm thinking more of the cheating rather than the criminal stuff (though that seems to go along way too often), and mocking the idea that it's just some younger thing and older generations had standards of conduct, like they aren't the ones who got it all started.

But is there a chance that maybe some of us do know for certain?

Of course. But I don’t know you! And in general I think that very few people have the complete story about anything. We all have the story that the person that told us wanted us to have. Hell even the people there have biases which cause them to tell the story slightly different.

I 100% believe that the story you are telling is mostly true. I also believe that the parts that don’t make sense to me would be explained with the complete true story.

Are you being serious? Lol you think TJ would outwardly speak about what Caleb was doing / going through behind the scenes? What?

I think it’s weird he would gush about him for most of the season if he had been a cancer to the team all season. I agree he wouldn’t bash him, but he was not neatral on Caleb. There’s a big difference between the two.

Unless you have some sort of link/direct quote from someone on the team, it's just that - a rumor. You can say you "know" till you're blue in the face, but that still doesn't make it a fact with no evidence. Absolutely a rumor.
Geez man this isn't a courtroom. The guy seems like he knows something, and he's sharing it on a message board. He doesn't need to call witnesses to the stand. If you don't like the info, move on.

No good leader - anywhere - publicly ridicules someone they are responsible for.

At the very least, if a leader has a person that's in a bad headspace they don't drag them down more.

What good what it have done if TJ strolls to the mic and starts to blast a young man who's struggling with his mental state? Is that helpful? Is that the old "kick 'em in the pants like my daddy did" mentality?

Best of luck to Grill now and in the future. At some point the man will need to find work and settle into a "normal" life of some sort. These theories floated can do nothing to help him.

There’s a big difference from the praise that he got from TJ for a lot of the year and being publicly ridiculed. Let’s at least be honest about that. And my only point about that is that it would make it seem like he wasn’t a problem until lately with the injury.

Now it’s very possible that TJ was doing some reverse psychology with those comments. And that was how he was trying to help him.
