Another aspect of the angst with Cael was that we moved to replace Bobby Douglas with him because we didn’t want to lose him the way we did Gable (which wasn’t totally irrational at the time given Nichols wasn’t ready to retire, but hindsight is 20/20).
We gave Cael his big break, brought him in early…and he bolted for a school that had all the resources that ISU was never going to seriously contend with.

Wrestling is not a revenue sport...you have to be prudent with the monies you had back then. The Football and Men's basketball coaches are the highest paid here. He was luried by Pedo State with more $$$. He could have won here...that bastard Iowa kept him from winning one or two here. He's Penn State into a monster.

Really? How so? Both were resource related. The only difference was for Gable the resources didn’t allow him to be hired as Nichols heir apparent. Sanderson left due to resources limiting his ability to recruit and run a championship program at that time.
I remember being at national duals for Junior high back with my oldest. Those Pennsylvania kids sawed through most of the teams. Our top one could avoid a blow out is the best I can say.

The difference is that TJ and CJR were previously acquainted and by all accounts at least friendly towards each other if not actually friends. When the job was open TJ TEXTED his friend to tell him the job he has longed for is available and he should look for a phone call from JP.
The only connection between Sanderson and Campbell is they both coached at ISU, separated by a decade. CS CALLED MC and talked to him for 45 minutes to sell him on leaving ISU to go to PSU.
I imagine that conversation went something like, you will never have the support you need to compete for championships there like you will here. Trust me I know. So leave that second rate excuse for an athletic department and come to one that wants to and actually can compete like you want.
I just hope PSU never wants to get serious about bball. Pretty sure CS actually knows TJ. We already know MC and TJ get along. PSU already has the template to poach our coach with one more salesman pushing the narrative of how stupid it would be to pass up the opportunity to coach in a real AD.
If there is any justice in this world for Iowa State & Penn State out there...we will see Kevin Dresser & ISU defeat Cael Sanderson for a national title and/or Coach Jimmy Rogers defeat Matt Campbell in the CFBP. Penn State, what they did and covered up, and the Karma that they are due...should provide this.
I don't hate Campbell & I don't hate Sanderson. This is beyond them.
A school that did things the right way should be rewarded... someday.

And if nothing close to those things happen... maybe TJ Otzelberger can bring ISU MBB a national title that will live in Ames for eternity.

I don't hate on Gable, that was a unique situation, no way could ISU move out Nichols. But I do hate on Sanderson. And leaning hate on Campbell. I have zero tolerance for anyone that disrepects ISU, even if tangentially.
TJ hates Wazzou with the heat of a million suns. I've seen many interviews.

Maybe I missed something, but from what I've read so far, he only relayed the type of guy he was to JP. Again, if I missed something, sorry, but that's not recruiting.
If I recall the situation correctly, a very big booster at PSU holding a very big bag of cash, had a lot to do with his move.

LOL. He works for Penn State now. It is his job to help make the PSU Athletic Department the best it can be. You don't think Dan McCarney did everything he could to help ISU in all areas even at the expense of Iowa?
Wouldn't you be disappointed in a coach we had who didn't do everything for Iowa State while here because he was protecting his alma mater?
Gable left because ISU would not pay him 4,000 dollars to be Harold Nichols assistant. That's why that one hurts like hell still because that is chicken feed even back then.
