Cael Sanderson

165# at State College HS (Freshman)
He is coached by Bo Nickals's dad

Not going to lie....Teag at ISU would be great! Go after him, Dresser. For some reason I don't think he would fit with the "Iowa Style"...

If Teag ends up anywhere other than wrestling for his dad at Penn State, Hell will have frozen over

Wrestlers are wired differently. At the end of the day, financially we couldn't compete with PSU and there were similar stories about an AD with an ego that we've all heard about this last weekend. It's been 16 years....it is what it is at this point.

Cael was never winning 12 titles in 16 years here. But I do firmly believe he'd have 4-5 now. But that's also assuming everything else stayed status qou from then to now.

I’m guessing somewhere in between those numbers

He was in one of my art history class and I saw he got a 97/100 on a test being passed back.

It wasn't the kind of test you could get 97/100 without studying a lot, countless images/dates/names/facts needed to be memorized so either he really studied hard or star athletes just get good grades passed out. It would have been an overly tough class to take as an elective if you weren't an art/design major but more interesting than most classes.
I thought he was some sort of art major? I swear I saw a documentary with him and he really is into art.

On 2Guys pod Hassel was arguing Mouser is like TJ and some fans on the chat were arguing Rogers is like TJ and they're both kind of right but Mouser would be at the midpoint of it still needing to get a couple mid major jobs before coming back. Rogers is more analogous as of now with the exception he wasn't actually on staff at ISU.
TJ had been a HC for a few years, Mouser never had. Reinforms that Hassel is an idiot

Cael or Gable could have built the #1 program at any power conference school with a good wrestling schedule too, I think ISU was on its way there (2nd, 5th, 3rd). There's no football coach who is that big of a personality/legend vs the rest of the sport at large.

Gable took the geographically closest open/available job to where he grew up and never left, I know the biggest ISU wrestling fans despise him but I respect that a lot even though I'm the kind of person to move all over the world myself.

I don't know as much about Cael as a coach but I have been to Gable practices in person and on video...I think he's actually just a great coach who'd have won anywhere. It's like if Deion was still Deion but also the mind of the greatest most experienced cfb coach. Players will come to that rare combination.
Gable also was in a great spot that allowed him to cheat at the same time.

When He started coaching Iowa as the center of HS wrestling. It isn’t anymore. Gable also decided that since the athletic department paid scholarships He was going to call all wrestling scholarships out of state scholarships. This allowed him to take an instate wrestler he really wanted, give him a 40% scholarship, and it was actually a full ride since instate costs were about 40% of out of state. So when the wrestler got his U bill, it was 0.

Nobody ever talks about the fake job that Bruce created for Cael in order to pay him while training for international competition.

Or the fact that the whole PSU gang (Cael, Cody, Cunningham and Varner) is still making money off of Ames to this day, through ownership of a dozen or so rental properties.

I think it was extremely unfortunate for Cael that his years at Iowa State coincided with Brands showing up at Iowa and essentially having a double recruiting class for Iowa, with all the transfers that followed him from Virginia tech, that allowed him to win 3 titles in a row.

Had that not been the case then I believe Cael might have won a championship while at Iowa State and things could have ended differently.

Have hard time believing Hassel thinks Mouse ‘is like’ TJ. He knows CW are buds and he would have loved to see ISU hire an unproven coordinator.

Oh god please never say this piece of Gable history in front of an Iowa fan when they are acting like everyone else is cheating in wrestling (hence why they aren't dominant like the gable times)

I suggest if anyone gets a chance to speak with Dan to please do it. He is extremely friendly and will talk to you like he knows you. Nate Carr is the same way.
My buddy worked maintenance at Iowa as a student (late '80s) and had to go to Dan's office to change a light bulb or something minor. Dan engaged him for half an hour or more. Legit wanted to know all about him. Gotta admit, I liked Dan a lot more after hearing that story. OTOH, his wrestlers were literally dangerous human beings. People are complicated....

I thought Mouser was an intriguing possibility but it no doubt would have been a big gamble. I think Pollard knows what he's doing. HC at a midmajor would be a great opportunity for Mouser.

If Mouser, the staff was getting gutted basically the same, along with the players I’d imagine. So when Rogers comes in he has a staff he can pick from and see if the leftovers (what mouser wiukd start with) are what he wants. Mouser would have to try to use his connections, which are generally all Campbell ones from ISU. Now Rogers has his players and recruits at SDSU and WSU to help backfill departures where Mouser gets to backfill with portal and try to hold our class. Rogers has a HC track record, Mouser had a couple years as an OC.

Rogers is a much better option for us out of the two, IMO.
