Buying a TV

My old 46" Sony projection tv took a crap this week. So I too have been researching a lot. I've settled on a 47" LG LCD tv from Walmart. $775 or somewhere around there. All the reviews Ive read have been excellent for this tv.

I've always heard that you need to be wary of electronics at Wal-mart, even with recognized brand names, has that changed?

Both compelling arguments.

Beat that price for a 1080P (I don't care that it supposedly doesn't make a difference at 42"... I can tell) Internet ready tv that you can directly stream Netflix to.

Trust the Asian guy. You can't fail.

In related news, who wants to go Tokyo drifting?

Doesn't need to be anything top-of-the-line, neither of us is that big of an electronics junkie. Just needs to be brand/model of decent quality that has a good picture and will last us a few years.
With these criteria I would consider Sanyo. Performance is middle of the road but they are an extremely reliable brand. They are #1 in reliability for plasma and near the top for LCD.

Well, we already have netflix streaming for our Wii, so that's not a huge deal for us, but the internet ready thing has me intrigued. How does that work, does it need to get hooked up to a separate computer or would I potentially be able to watch stuff on ESPN3 or CloneZone right on the TV?

Yes, I know I could probably search for previous threads about this. The now Mrs. and I are looking at spending some of our wedding gift money on a new tv. Doesn't need to be anything top-of-the-line, neither of us is that big of an electronics junkie. Just needs to be brand/model of decent quality that has a good picture and will last us a few years. Our place isn't huge so I'm thinking a 42" screen. Our tentative budget for the tv is around $800, but that is probably somewhat negotiable if we're only going to get a crap tv in that price range. Thanks for the help fanatics.

If you are just a regular guy who doesn't need expensive electronics to compensate for a small *****, you can hardly go wrong. Figure out what you can afford and buy in that range. LCD for rooms with natural light, plasma for rooms without. Bang, zoom, you're done.

Just bought the 42 inch Insignia LCD for $599 at Best Buy. 2 year warranty, 120 hz 1080, 4 hdmi and tons of other hookups. Had more features and a better warranty than any TV up to the $1000 price range. You'll spend another $50-$100 on hdmi cords so plan that into the budget.
Where's that facepalm picture?
or use monoprice.com and get the same quality HDMI cables for 10 dollars total for 4
Ding ding ding! Winner! My order of 4 cables Monday was like...$16.17 or something like that.
I checked out that site. Unbelievable. I'm glad I have only bought one cord so far for $30. I will order the rest from that site. Are the cords of the same quality?
Same exact quality.

We have a Samsung LED and I'm pretty sure we can watch stuff straight from it. I know for a fact there's no computer crap involved for me to get on the internet on the TV, but I don't know about watching video. Might have to test at lunch.

The Wii is internet ready too. You just have to install the free web browser from their online store. Also works with multiple wireless keyboards.

The Wii internet sucks, and I'm pretty sure doesn't support video. I know I at least tried to do Hulu on it one time and couldn't get it to work.

The last time I tried to roll internet info on the TV screen my wife said the following. "Get that **** off the TV. If I wanted to see something online I would just turn on the laptop that's sitting in front of me".

As far as streaming, my Directv receiver and PS3 can handle those tasks.

Proof that they are likely the same quality:

Best Buy employee discount is cost + 5%.

The same Rocketfish cables that sell for $60 in store, employees can get for 4 bucks.

I always wanted to work at Best Buy in HS because of this. I'd probably have ended up spending a ton of money on useless crap, though.

In my experience I would say the quality may actually be a little better. I have purchased audio and video cables, speaker wire, and computer cables from this site and they have all been top notch. Never buy any of these things from a B&M store, the markup is incredible! That $100 Monster Cable that the Best Buy sales guy tells you will make all the difference in your picture quality is really worth about $5 and is no different than the cable you can buy online.

Ha, I just knew a couple of friends that did so they got me stuff. I would never want to work there though.

I think for the most part it's true still, as they get the lesser quality tv's even of the name brands, because of the type of consumer they are appealling to. But I've done extensive research on this tv. The Same tv is selling at sears, only 42." It has gotten great reveiws from everywhere I've read about it. Alot of TV for the money.

It is cheaper because it doesn't have all the fancy options. only 2 HDMI inputs, no internet connection. But I really don't need that crap anyway.

I have a 36 inch LG LCD in my bedroom (of course that one was from sears) and love it.

I will not buy many electronics at Wally World, but in this case I feel confident in the name brand, and with the research I put into it.
