Rather than make up a history where Purdy wasn't clutch, here's the outcomes of the final meaningful drive of games where we were tied or down one score with Purdy at QB

View attachment 105455

We scored on 60% of drives where we needed points to tie or win.

Edit: forgot to add the Clemson fumble, 56.25% is good.
We scored on 56% of the drives but ended up winning just 31% of those games.(losing the last 6). The 56% includes 3 touchdowns with failed 2 pt conversions as well. Purdy was a great QB at ISU and most of the losses were not on him. It is really tough to be clutch within our offensive system.

Certainly disappointing to only win 31%. So we have to ask a couple questions.

Is scoring at a 56% rate good? I think so.

Is winning 31% of games in which you're down by a score with one last drive good? Probably!

KU has been running all over many teams in the league this year. We are not behind them in talent. We may not have the talent to win the league, but I don't think anyone expects us to do that either. We have the best defense in the league. Given that, we should have enough talent on offense to be middle of the pack in the league. The issue here is not talent.
KU has a running quarterback. It may be time for us to consider that again if we are going to trot out lines that aren't that good.
This.

We have always looked frantic and unprepared during the 2 minute drill.

And yes, this year's team had the talent to at least make the CCG.
No - we don't have the RB, OL, or WR talent to be in the top two in the conference. Love how people at the beginning of the year were worried Noel would transfer for NIL money. I would actually be shocked if he got any offers this winter or spring. He runs to the sideline out of bounds to avoid contact all the time, he has the dropsies, oh and he's also a punt returner with a knack for getting us negative yardage via letting punts go behind him. Last week was actually one of his first weeks where he decided to catch them.

Who was the guy who got destroyed at Qb for a season and made a nice move to WR, I think under Danny Mac. Talk about a bad line.

I enjoyed the explanation of what's wrong with the OL. Sounds like scheme to me. And the big question is why nobody in Ames sees this, or does anything about it?

Maybe they should listen to this podcast?
It's simple. Bruns played and started multiple seasons for a high major college football program while these guys were jackin' around at a D3. Who do you think has more credibility here?

This list should start with QB.

This may be an underrated point you're making here. While I generally buy the idea that "football is football," I do think OL strategy might be one area where you pretty much have to throw the book out. The difference going from D3 to P5 is big for every position group, but I think where it's most notable is along the DL. I think the size and explosiveness of DL at the P5 level is so vastly different from lower levels that there's probably a lot that no longer applies when it comes to OL play. Sure, your OL are bigger and more athletic, but I think the delta from D3 to P5 size and athleticism combinations along the defensive line is WAY greater than that of OL, or any other position group on average.

I don't see this as a problem, given his frame. Gotta stay healthy out there.

Some of you are way to focussed on this Mt. Union thing. Nick Sirianni spent six years at Mt. Union as a player and a coach - more than Matt Campbell and I think one more year than Manning. It's worked out for him.

Lombardi spent 16 years as a high school and college coach assistant (fordam and army) and 15 years in the NFL.

Complain about their coaching and ability to develop offensive lineman. They did it at Toledo. Why not here. I don't know that answer. I am not close enough to the situation. The results are not there, though.

Leave it at that - saying stuff about D III is silly and nothing to do with reality.

Two OL in the portal and a new OL coach / coordinator could do the program wonders this spring.

He had Kareem Hunt at Toledo.

Toledo is like Houston, you have to be awful to not succeed as a coach there.

Easy mode where you get quality recruits and only have a couple tough games a year.

Vince Lombardi had Paul Hornung. Bill Belichick had Tom Brady.

Great teams are always a mix of great players and coaches
