Brats! Summer grilling.

Honestly I think Johnsonville makes a solid brat. At least they are juicer than Fareway’s or Hy-Vee’s.

I'm still gonna eat brats in general, but after that visit to that town, my feelings about J-Ville brats are similar to being around the broasted chicken at Pizza Ranch after working in that kitchen.

I can respect J-Ville's HQ looking like something out of Knight Rider though.

I bought some cheap Kirkland brats this weekend. Soaked some of them overnight in a mix of 1 bottle (real sugar)Dr. Pepper and one of those little $1 bottles of Blues Hog Tennessee Red. Grilled them tonight and they were really good.

Can't remember what my buddy soaked the brats in, but he made a Swiss cheese with chopped fugi apples. It was really good.

I can’t believe there are self respecting Iowans stanning Johnsonville and Kirkland in this thread.

The Costco brats are pretty solid. I've actually been pretty disappointed with HyVee and Fareway's fresh brats the last few times I bough them.
 
I usually cook them on my Traeger, but yesterday I was smoking some pulled pork for work today. I made smash burgers on my griddle and decided to try brats too. i boiled them in beer and then threw them on the griddle and they were amazing. They were just Johnsonville cheddar. Definitely doing that again.

The beer boil will take out the excess grease that will be in them. It also allows you to finish them and not make them charcoal black if you like them well done.

The original owner of the Elma locker chewed my brother's ass for beer boiling the brats. He was adamant that you grill them, and that's how I've done it ever since.

I've done both. If I just grill them, you have a fine line of keeping them from being dried out to having grease blasting the person who bites into them. Boiling them sucks that excess grease out and gives a wider range of keeping moisture and not flirting with drying them out.

I was always a beer boil/grill sear kind of guy, but ever since then I've been grilling at that medium heat range, which is a little like smoking them but not quite, and I rarely lose grease or moisture while still getting the sear you crave.

Costco Brats on the pellet smoker today. Tried 225 for 30 mins and then increased to 350 to finish. Casings were too tough. I’ll just stick to 375 next time.
