Provided that there are no "automatic" qualifiers coming from outside the top 12 -- which has only happened once (2017). #11 and #12 are always tenuous spots.

That’s why I made the point about Oregon. If they make the CFP then the Pac-12 would get to elevate a team into the Rose Bowl regardless of their rank.

I've been to Orlando, San Antonio and Memphis for bowl games and Orlando would be the last place of those three I'd go to again
I wouldn't mind Houston for something different.

San Antonio is set up really well for the bowl game with hotels, stadium etc. I thought that was pretty cool.

Who would have thought a few years ago we'd ever be discussing that a bowl game would be a disappointment? But I get it, its just human nature. No big12 championship game or NY6 game 'because of all our returning core' will keep alot of people home to watch it on TV, imo. If they do the 12-team playoff in the future, I would think non-playoff bowl games would be even more hard to draw fans to.

Houston was the worst bowl destination I've been to. Unless you like strip clubs, I guess. Otherwise, it's just a massive city that happens to be hosting a football game. The TCU fans were no fun. Don't spill any beer on their loafers!

Yep, very nice stadium (at the time) but unless you were an ISU or TCU fan you wouldn't know there was a bowl game even being played. Event was lost in the big city and the locals didn't know/care about it.

Some year I am going to fly to the Outback bowl, get front row seats behind the endzone and be there standing the whole game with the reddest of red IState shirts on just to d*ck with all the ToE faithful and repay them for always having one random dooshcanoe in Iowa crap at ISU games.
I'll be with you.

I'm hoping the hoks wind up playing Tennessee in a bowl game. Those hillbillies like to throw golf balls as well as other items at opposing coaches and players. I can just imagine Fat Brian getting beaned by a Titleist on the sidelines.

It would probably hurt the golf ball

Brett McMurphy has us in the Alamo vs Arizona State. That'd be fun
Would be an interesting scenario if we end up tied with Baylor who would get the Alamo Bid (OU to Playoff, OSU to Sugar Bowl)? I'm guessing the Alamo Bowl reps would want us but not sure how much pull they have anymore. Think Conference pretty much dictates who goes to what Bowl these days.

The Big 12 is more hands-off on these things than some conferences. The SEC B1G and ACC have all gone to a more conference-involved approach but not the Big 12. That's part of the reason why we got the Camping World Bowl over K-State a couple years ago - the bowl wanted our fans.

Alamo Bowl takes pride in always having ranked teams so if it's a ranked 9-3 (6-3) Baylor up against unranked 8-4 (6-3) Iowa State then we probably are out of luck.

Conference has no say. There are the top bowls locked in and after that it’s the bowls’ discretion. As long as they qualify a bowl can leapfrog whoever they want. No real reason for a conference to lobby for one school over the other in a given bowl.

Ok, maybe the Big 12 is different than I know how the SEC works:

" POOL OF SIX BOWLS: After the Citrus Bowl selects a team, there will be a pool of six bowls and the Conference, in consultation with the institutions and the bowls, will make the assignments for these six bowl games from all eligible SEC teams. "

It sounds like the Big 12 just stays out of the way, at least that's how JP described it on Monday in an interview. Obviously the bowl people meet with the schools and all that, but really they make their picks and the conference doesn't seem to play a role.

The SEC specifically assigns teams to bowls based off opponents. This way they can try to game the system for a positive overall bowl record and can avoid embarrassing matchups.

It's the reason why Aggy and the shorthorns have avoided each other in a bowl game for the past decade.

Jamie talked last night how bowls are encouraged to pick according to standings, but can pick how they want. He said he agrees that's how it should be done while acknowledging Iowa State has benefited from leaping over schools.
