One more that my husband just reminded me about:
The Perfect Ten
Multiple choice trivia questions with repeated rounds on the same questions (you're told how many you get wrong, but not which ones), so strategy to narrow down which ones you have wrong. Played as two teams.

Forgot to mention one of my all time favorites: The Farming Game. Not too difficult, and really fun. Kind of like monopoly, but building a farm (and accounting for variability in crop production and overhead).

Spice Road is a lot of fun and pretty easy to learn.

Another one that is more complicated but has been a hot for us is Architects of the West Kingdom

Kingdom Builder is fun and is pretty cheap a lot of times.

Once you add Cities and Knights, you'll never go back to regular Settlers. If the kids understand the original well, then the expansion shouldn't be too hard. Otherwise if you're helping them a lot, you'll be doing a lot more in Cities and Knights. I'd highly recommend it at some point though.

Another recommendation though would be Codenames. That can be a lot of fun with 4-6 players. Other fun ones for that 8-10 group might be King of Tokyo (think battle Yahtzee), Sushi Go! (Japanese-style card game, quick), or Oregon Trail (Card game, lots of fun with the family).

I forgot about Sushi Go and Code Names. Great games.

That said, I don't like the Catan expansions. Takes longer to play a game and it just adds more stuff to think about.
