Bo Ryan Retiring Effective Immediately!

Call his offensive style "boring" — more fairly, "deliberate" — he won a ****-ton of games.

At Wisconsin.

With exception of Soderberg's 1 season (between Bennett and Ryan), the most recent coach to have a winning record at UW was Walter Meanwell — 1920-1934

UNI better start cheering for Greg Gard to win a lot of games this year. If he starts losing games, I wonder if they don't keep him around as the Head Coach? I'm sure Jacobson is on Alvarez's short list.

I would guess Tony Bennett at Virginia is Wisconsin's 1st through 100th choice. Bo Ryan really wanted Gard to get the job and a mid-season retirement is the only way he can guarantee that Gard gets a shot.

Reading more on it sounds like Bo wanted Gard in April but the AD was against it. He did this to get the guy he wanted. Will see how that goes.

Re: Bo Ryan Retires

Just had a press conference with the announcement. Apparently planned to allow assistant time to get through some family issues.

From espn:

Ryan is the winningest coach in Wisconsin history, with a 747-233 record over 145 seasons. His 172-68 record (.717) in conference play is the best winning percentage in Big Ten history.

I thought bill snyder was old.

Probably would have worked out better had he not left him a 7-5 team...

If true then he is an arrogant ****. These guys who get to the point they are bigger than the program or the university and think they get to call the shots even after they leave.

If Bo quitting mid season to force WI naming Gard the interim HC is true, that's really putting the pressure on Gard. He has 2/3 of a season left to turn it around and start winning. That's a stressful audition. If he loses a lot of games, I can't see WI giving Gard the job.

This is right. But I think Gard doesn't get the permanent job unless he really does something positive with this team and makes it hard for Barry to pull the plug.

True, but if he wasn't going to get the job otherwise, at least he has a shot this way.

This UNI fan has become a giant Wisky fan for the rest of the year. They have to call Tony Bennett first and with what he's built at UVA and the buyout (~$3MM), he'll say no. That second call has to be Ben Jacobson, plays the same style, recruits the same areas, wants to stay in the upper midwest.

This is bad news...

EDIT--Its pretty well known that Michigan State is Jake's dream job, but this one might be too much to pass up if offered.

Couple that with the UNI AD leaving to Tulane.

With losses to Western Illinois, Georgetown, OU by 17, UW-Milwaukee and Marquette, its not like Gard is inheriting a bunch of talent.

If this isn't health related, the guy quit on his team.

Whar JohnnyDugouts?

Dognuts is nowhere to post about this news and nowhere to post about ISU basketball being ranked top 5, but all over Iowa basketball recruiting of players nobody has ever heard of. What a huge Wisconsin and ISU fan.

I'm wondering if he did it to make sure "his" guy got the job with no questions asked.

I think this is a possible. Last summer when he announced he was going to retire after this season, he mentioned Gard taking over. I don't think Alvarez liked that. Probably, depending on how this season goes, Wisconsin will still go after Virginia's Tony Bennett, a Wisconsin native and son of **** Bennett, a long time Wisconsin coach.
