Bird Migration and Misc Birding Thread

They have a grumpy look about them, like they aren't to pleased with your attention.
Cool pic though.

Was REALLY windy that day, you can see mom's "ears" bending in the wind. I was lucky to see the owlet awake and attentive. Was right next to rich folks suburb development road so they were used to people. Owlets, when awake, are very curious about the world and will keep an eye on you. The parents, not so much as you can see mom in my photo with her eyes closed.

Heard adult Barred Owls hooting earlier (got deck door open) and now I am hearing juveniles doing their whiny "feed me" cry. Went out in dark to see if I could spy them but only managed to let a couple of mosquitoes into the house!

Took another bad phone camera shot through the screen. Trying to identify this bird. I thought, because of it's movement and behavior, that it might be a red-breasted nuthatch, but the head looks to be completely black. Any ideas?

Looks like an oriole to me
Maybe a young one
I thought that might be, young one, or even a young robin. We've got lots of both.
It's just the way it moved flitting around, like a wren or warbler.

Young robins around here anyway don't have as much orange as this appears to show. Plus, I rarely see them alone :)

Went to Lake Lily Pad (what I call a local lake that is covered with lily pads by mid-summer) and saw a number of bird species on or in the pads. I don't usually shot red-winged blackbirds but this one on a lily pad was worth a shot.

More birds with cell phone pics.

Heard a barred owl hooting at 7:50 tonight as I sat down and turned on the TV. So grabbed the camera even though it was getting pretty dark. Heard two owls just as I grabbed the camera and it was brief caterwaul of calls like jungle animals. Only spied one and it's a high ISO 12500 shot but okay for sharing as a "sighting".

For being cell phone pics I thought all 3 of these turned out well

Warbler migration is starting up here and I am sort of missing out. Been decking staining and now onto reseeding the patch of mostly dirt that is supposed to be my small grass lawn. Maybe get out for a late afternoon walkabout.

Saw some birders in Jefferson County Park, Fairfield this afternoon.

Still have warbling vireos and orioles. However the bees at the jelly are being a nuisance to the orioles and hummingbirds

Same here. Lows in the low 40s this weekend. I'm guessing the orioles move out very soon.

Thought we were going to have wasp-takeover of our hummingbird feeder, but it didn't happen. However, I have a few hummingbirds spending a lot of time on and near the feeder. Guess it's time to increase the sugar content of the feed.

Went up to our NE Iowa Mississippi River trailer Friday. Filled hummingbird feeders and put jelly out for orioles. Many of the former, but just a couple of the latter, making a quick stop and didn't eat much. Woodpeckers, finches, and bees ate all the jelly! So I took it down, washed it and put it away for the season, assuming the chilly weekend weather had sent orioles south. Looked out today and there's an oriole at one of the hummingbird feeders.
