He's not going to be a McDermott type who you can golf with and have a converstaion with. Everything I've heard about him points to him being an ***. As long as he wins and brings the magic back, I could care less if hes shaking hands and kissing babies.
Why low odds? We could probably get him at a fairly low amount after his fiasco at Kentucky and the rumors about him being a drunken fool. The guy needs someone to give him a chance to get back in the coaching game and quite frankly he would probably jump at the chance to get to restart his career at a program like Iowa State. Gillespie is another coach like Mike Davis, Larry Eustachy, etc.... that had a higher profile job and wound up trying to revive their career at some mid major program with little to no basketball tradition. Do you think Gillespie would rather go coach at some dumpy mid-major or try to revive his career at a BIG XII program with at least a decent history of winning?
I agree. I always thought Davis got a raw deal. Indiana is just as bad, if not worse, now than they were when he was fired.
Catching lightening in a bottle with The General's recruits. I am a big Indiana fan, so I keep up with their sports. Knight said long before he was fired that the 2001/2002 season was lining up to be a special season.
...and young women who like to Hot Tub. Plus, no one cares about DePaul BB so it would never be news. That is probably a great fit for him.
Yes i know they are a big deal, that's why he went to rehab, IF and notice i said IF this happens, this is going to be kind of a LE type of deal, get out of the spot light and get your life back on track, then make us into a basketball "power" again, Ames Iowa is a great place to get your life on track, nice city, nice people and he's like Tubby he will be god.
Ever hear of giving people second chances? (What we should have done with Larry). I think ISU would have an incredible coach in Gillispie and a chance to get his life together again by living in Ames, IA......and back in the B12. Could be the best thing for a guy like this. Good Karma for ISU too give a second chance like this. Yes, back in the B12 where this guy knows how to win. (I am sure this part is pretty big too, or the main reason for hiring him.)
He did have Knight's guys, but he still has to know how to coach in order to get all the way the championship.
He took Indiana to 4 NCAA tournaments in 6 years after replacing a legend, and will be taking UAB this year.
That qualifies, IMO.
What were Wayne's questionable recruiting methods? Leave out D1 scheduling because that was an obvious sham.
I think he would be an excellent candidate as well. We should give him a look. I hope.
People always say stuff like this about coaches but let's face it - so was Eustachy and we STILL have people wanting him back. Because fans want to win.
First, I am not a UNI fan. I hate UNI. I grew up as an Iowa State fan. My Dad is an Iowa State fan. But we grew up near Waterloo, so it is easier to get to UNI games for my parents and they just like basketball and have become UNI fans too. I want UNI to lose every game. I was so angry after the UNI loss this year that I briefly decided I was done with McDermott since he liked UNI better than Iowa State. I didn't like the McDermott hire to start because I thought he wanted to be at Iowa and I didn't like UNI.
I don't mean to tear down Iowa State, but I am realistic and I do think that the names being floated around here have about a 2% chance of even being slightly interested. That's my opinion and if I am wrong and we hire Jay Wright then you can talk to me.
I've grown to like McDermott a lot. Part of that is because he has had terrible luck and you can't help but feel for the guy.
I think he'll be successful here because his teams HAVE gotten better. The numbers prove that. A poster who doesn't post much over on CR any more had the statistics to back that up. This is clearly Greg's best team at Iowa State. Obviously, the wins aren't there, but the conference is a TON better than when Greg started. I think McDermott is a really, really good coach.
Look---at this point, it is hard to point at anything concrete. But I just feel like keeping McDermott is our best chance at being successful in the long-term and in the short-term.
Oh.... you shouldn't have gone after JSB like that. She is going to hold that over your head forever just like the fact that she has gone to every ISU game this year when the team stunk. Make no mistake.... she is a far better fan then you even if she is just a poser and really is a UNI fan.
Sad that this is true! DePaul used to own Chicago! After two horrible AD's (one still there that brags about how successful their womens' programs are)...it will be tough for DePaul to ever regain the spot it had in Chicagoan's hearts!
