Big-12 / Pac-12 possible merger

What's bigger than big? Rub it in the B1G a bit.

MEGA 20
LARGE 20
HUGE 20
COLOSSAL 20
MAMMOTH 20
WEIGHTY 20
FAR-REACHING 20
Great 20
Massive 20
Enormous 20
Preeminent 20

Haha! Not bad. I still like the Pac 20. If it comes to that.

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but this merger or schedule alliance with the Pac-12 is way far off, if at all. The Pac-12 will follow or do whatever the Big 10 tells them to do. Like we with the AAC schools, there is no rush for the Pac-12 or Big 10 to add. The Big 12 schools will still be there. Both conferences are going to wait and see how they can work out their own football merger or scheduling agreement together. Plus, Kevin Warren doesn't appear to me to be the type to move fast.

This meeting today is nothing more than posturing for use in negotiations with Fox and ESPN.

Oh i dont think its quite that far off. We all assume OuT will be gone after this year. So each Big12 team needs 2 more games. So thats 16 opponents. They could find a way to get some pac12 teams to fill those, and maybe put them on the pac12 network as a condition/enticement. It would be tough to schedule only a year in advance but possible.

I do agree w you the pac is in no rush here. And they will wait on the b1g, who are definitely holding all the cards right now.

Nebby radio poo-poohing any PAC 12-Big 12 merger talks...says the prime PAC 12 teams will merge with the BIG in 2025, leaving the remainder to merge with the Big 12. Nebbie may be luckiest school out there (other than Rutgers)...team sucks.

Isn’t the era of numerical and geographic names for a conference over?

call it The Big Stream Conference!

Make it simple and just go with “THE CONFERENCE”. In all caps like that also. We don’t need anything else because we will take over from there.

I pretty much agree. Great that they talked. I really doubt a merger is in the cards. I could see a possible schedule agreement, but even that would seem fairly limited, as the PAC schedules are pretty full already. Not clear to me how a schedule agreement greatly improves our financial situation. But, we need to throw out a lot of nets.

I agree with selling the naming rights to the conference. "Monster Energy Conference" next year will be "Google Conference" then maybe "Budweiser Conference" similar to what NASCAR did.

If not, just go with the BigPac

I also look forward to the ISU vs iowa Rose Bowl game.

You don't merge until the B8 bleeds OU and UT dry first. Remember, they were counting on the B12 folding after this season so they can get away free or at least at a great discount. **** that. Set up an agreement with the P12 for the remainder of the two conference's existing agreements. Keep the qualifier status of both conferences. Hold the Longhorns and Sooners hostage. Then you merge and arrange the schools into more conducive groups for scheduling.

It’s been fairly well documented that the remaining 8 teams do not move the needle much with regard to viewership. Thus, I question what benefit it brings the P12 to enter into an agreement of any kind with those 8 teams. Is Oregon/Washington/USC, etc just itching for a trip to Lubbock/Manhattan (KS)/, etc? What’s motivating that?

The goal of the talks IMO is to combine the FB inventory of both conferences with the goal of engaging networks in bidding beyond ESPN and Fox. Benefits both conferences or ultimately a merged conference.

Rather than merger, what about a consolidated TV package? Add the 4 talked about G5 teams to the Big12. Keep two conferences with a scheduling agreement and a combined TV network. Then with an 8 team playoff, you could still get two autobids.

Merger seems unlikely but a deal in which the conferences play much of their non-conference schedules against each other would be valued by media partners.
