It can certainly be a wow factor to clinch the deal when you add in....
- better recent history
- established coaching staff
- closer to home (huge impact for TX recruits)
- better historical tradition ( Orange bowls, Gale Sayers, conference championships)
I grant you that they don't have Hickory Park, but anybody that doesn't realize that KU has some pluses to sell recruits isn't aware of the competition that our coaches go up against.
Right on the money. And don't underestimate the importance of bowl games. Recruits want to spend 2 weeks on an all-expense paid trip to Florida, Arizona, or California, in December, and play in a bowl game setting. It's a big selling point. And while bowl games cannot be guaranteed, recent history and schedule indicates that Kansas is very very likely to be in a bowl game next year and into the future, while we have very little chance of appearing in a bowl game anytime soon.
Are we just sitting on our *** and letting our recruits go? I feel like we are watching our commitment list bleed. :cry:
KU's athlete dorms, the Jayhawk Towers, are actually pretty horrible. They were built in the 60's and 70's, iirc. And they are open to all students, as far as I know. I think the combination of hte Orange Bowl season and the opening of the new football facility have allowed Mangino and co. to strike while the iron is hot. Still, the football stadium is old and crappy. At least the track is coming out this off-season or next. KU football fans are getting better (set attendance records each of the last four years), but still seem far more fair-weather than ISU fans to me.
Now, I want to address something else that someone brouhgt up, at the risk that I might get booed off this board. Hickory Park is overrated. There, I said it. It definitely isn't as good as KC BBQ. And, after eating at both George Battles and Hickory Park several times, I would say that Hickory Park isn't even the best BBQ restaurant in Ames.

I didn't know that KU moved to Kansas City.That would be like me (in Ames) claiming how good something in Des Moines.
Lawrence actually has a lot of great places to eat. It's been ranked as one of the better college towns in several publications. There's no doubt KU has made strides in football with the new facilities and an athletic budget somewhere around 5th or 6th in the conference, but the stadium really needs to remove that track and the fans are so spoiled from basketball that they are probably the most fair-weather fans in the conference. Here's one way to look at it Cyclones, when Mangino took over KU they were in a bigger hole than you guys are in. So it's very possible for you guys to overcome the last couple of years and get back to some bowl games. The North still looks pretty weak, your schedule looks good and you return some young players that show potential.

No. In fact, this is an area where ISU has an advantage because KU doesn't really have a Fredrickson Court type of thing. The football players that I knew took the scholarship money they got for room and board and rented houses down by the stadium, but I'm not sure how many kids actually do that.

People only go to HP for the atmosphere and hype. Don't get me wrong, HP still has good food and I love it, but it is not the best of all time reputation that it gets.
Losing this kid hurt. Unfortunately, I think Boffeli is next. This is going to be a terrible recruiting class.

Any recruits you can get when there's a coaching change are a plus. Usually you can almost write off the class, especially if it's a late coaching change or a 100% turnover in people and philosophy, for example Morgan out/McDermott in, McCarney out/Chizik in, Chizik out/Rhoads in. It even hurts some the following year since the new coaches haven't been looking at and identifying younger HS players and are new at establishing relationships and experience with HS coaches in our recruiting hotbeds. Welcome to the Jamie Pollard era.

That said, we are in deep, deep trouble on the recruiting front...
