Ben Bruns

Two games in a row now where this has been an obvious problem. Corrective action is required.

Yeah, I realize we lost two really good lineman, one of which is in the NFL now. But the O-line is really playing poorly right now. This is one area we really shouldn't be massively overwhelmed every week, and it looks like we are right now.

I love it when Ben gets carried away and starts talking football at a level I can't even comprehend! I learn something every time he does that.

Has anyone wondered if our strngth coach is a detriment. We lost weight to become leaner so that we can run and yet the d/olines and players look week need. Did we have a better strength coach couple years ago? Our line people have no power. We use to have Mac trucks and now we have Volvos.

I heard on the reaction show that Ben Bruns was critical of ISU after the game...What did he say and what was he critical of?
He should be critical unlike Eric Heft. The O-line and D-line have been pathetic in 4 games this year. It's hell when your player of the game is your punter. It is not like these players they are facing are super human. We stunk up the place! They better tighten up the helmets this week. This last week in Oklahoma paper they were ripping OU's defense.

Last night was sort of when the light bulb surrounding our O-line really went off last night. We knew the defensive line would be bad, but I think we all expected very good offensive line play. To say we haven't gotten that is an understatement.

the oline has been getting blown up over the ball all year, Reggie Stephens was a much bigger loss than any thought.

I think Bruns has to even be surprised, at the start of the year, he said the offense can be unstoppable at times(practice) and I think he also expected the oline to be much better than has been shown.

I was thinking the same thing about Bruns after the UNI game. He should be our color guy. And John Walters doesn't do it for me as are voice. The our radio broadcasts are high school quality.

So is your grammar.

Unstoppable in practice ... they should be ... against our defense.

Signed,

Discouraged but loyal in Marion

I appreciate what Ben has to say. Yes he loves ISU but he is not afraid to tell it like it is when it comes to this team. There needs to be a critical voice on the 'inside'. I learn something about football every time I hear him speak.

I like that we have someone who isn't afraid to tell it like it is. I don't want homers or sunshine pumpers...just give it to me straight.

Anyone can tell it like it is. It takes professionalism to do it correctly. Just because you don't hear John or Eric saying, "We sucked *** today" doesn't mean they aren't thinking it. ... They are just more professional about it ... and its not their job to complain and throw their hands into the air in disgust.

I Guess I See It Differently

Has anyone wondered if our strngth coach is a detriment. We lost weight to become leaner so that we can run and yet the d/olines and players look week need. Did we have a better strength coach couple years ago? Our line people have no power. We use to have Mac trucks and now we have Volvos.

I don't see where our OL has lost weight. Looking at our underclassman, IMO Osemele (335lbs) and Hicks (330) could stand to lose 10-15lbs. I think we will see a different type of OL in the future. I think we'll see quicker guys in the 285-300lb range based on the OL recruits the last couple years.

On the DL if feel that we have inherited some kids that Mac/Chizek recruited that just can't put on a lot of weight. At DE: Parker(250), Neal (230) & Maggitt(240) - I just don't see guys with the body structure to play at 260lbs.

AT DT: Rump(280), McDonough(290), Lang(270) are guys who I think have gotten bigger the last year. I think after another offseason we'll stronger and bigger DT's- I would hope McDonough can get over 300lbs and Rump & Lang close to 290.

Back in 08 Oklahoma ran a hurry up offense with one of the biggest lines in history IIRC... Phil Loadholt: 6'8 350. Duke Robinson.. etc.

Love Bruns ! LOved watching him play , love listening to him , Glad hes one of us ! That game was difficult for sure to watch and usually I am positive had rough time myself saturday!

Bruns is the authority when talking ISU FB, especially Oline play and development. I think John and Eric do a fantastic job, and having Ben on the sidelines is a wonderful third dimension. The question I'd like Ben to really answer is: As it stands right now, what does he see for the future? Are we improving in terms of talent level compared to our competition? Will our line sustain in performance over the next few years or is there going to be a drop off? Are there any legitimate playmakers on this team?

He can be a bit of a richard when it comes to the Hawks and the rivalry, but he loves ISU so I get it, not a big deal to me.

I agree, BUT, it has goes both ways. Zabel was the master of the backhanded compliment towards ISU. Well, more like the apprentice since Fry was the master. Way it goes I guess.

I do think that Bruns is as close to the voice of the average Cyclone fan as there is.

I can't get the reaction show here as no radio station that carries it comes in worth a darn. Ben's been good when I've heard him on there. Yeah, the O-line sucked and that had a lot to do with the zero in the 54-0 score, but plenty of bad play on all parts of the game.
