Be like this team

Agreed. But Fizer, Stevie, and Horton would probably beat White, Ejim, and Philips.

I wasn't comparing talent necessarily, but just types of player.

That is kind of the point. JVB and Railey share little besides height with Rancik and Shirley

Nurse got hit by a truck the night of November 29, 1998 (Sunday). He missed the game at UNI (L, 57-61) and the home game against North Texas (W, 72-45). He didn't start the Western Illinios game on December 5th (Saturday) and was not expected to play but entered the game to a huge standing ovation and led the team back from a big early deficit to an overtime win (80-73). I was sitting in sweet seats in the parquet behind the scorer's table for that game. You could hear word spread throughout the arena as people noticed Mike was coming in. The place started rockin' when Mike came in the game and he made sure it never stopped.

In that game he scored 16 points on 5 of 9 shooting including 3 of 7 from 3. He hit 3 of 4 free throws, had 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 22 minutes. Not bad for a guy that had stitches in his calf and head and could easily been killed less than six days before.

Yeah, I guess that is tough. I think up to that point Mike was just a good player. That night was when everyone knew we had someone really special.

Plus he refered to himself in the third person, which is always fun.

I'm nervous when I look back at that season that we won't see it again, like it was lighting in a bottle (sadder perhaps that the lightning didnt even get us to the final 4).

I have the opposite view.

First, given only one team can win the NC, it take luck for any program. For virtually all, it takes luck to reach a Final Four. Some need a lot less luck, but still.
Look at KU. For as dominant as they are, they went 20 years without a title. Only

There were no high flyers in 2000. We started 4 players 6-4 and under! One big-time recruit. Three JuCos. Relativity "new" team. The coach was not hired away from a top program. We were NOT lucky before the season in setting up this team.
What we were was tough, smart, hard-working, talented, and had two big-time players.
Heck, Wayne Morgan got us to the second round.

Shirley and Rancik spent most of the 2000 season taking turns getting hurt.
Sounds like Godfrey might be a big part of this year's team.

No one is trying to compare the talent of the 2000 and 2010 teams.
That year I went to every home game, 5 road games, KC, the tin cities
and Detroit. (was so made after MSU I drove home that night sun came up
around Newton) That team was far more about attitude than talent.

Hopefully this year is about which of these Freshmen want to be the start
of the next era of Cyclone BB.

I have always wondered how we would have done with a healthy Rancik and Shirley. Johnson did well, but he was so undersized and had bad hands. If the Rancik and Shirley of 2001 were on the 2001 team...?

No one is equating the two, but most are comparing. All I am saying is the primary similarity between JVB and Railey to Rancik and Shirley is height. Why not compare JVB to Stevie Johnson? Both were/are posts that did/do not post anyone up.

I was too young to drive, but the ride back from Auburn Hills was one of the worst I can remember. I was so ticked/sad.

Only reason I compared JVB to Rancik was both have a decent shot while being the same build. I don't recall Stevie having a great shot. If JVB can post up better against mismatches like Rancik, he could be really good for this team.

Rancik was a complete offensive guy his senior year. JVB can get on a roll and stroke it.
I think JVB will play more like Stevie his senior year, except the defense will not be able to drop off him. Unfortunately, JVB will probably not rebound or defend like either.
