I know that the "official" reason that Dykstra decommitted was that he wasn't ready to commit to the daily grind of D1 basketball, wasn't it? I realize that sometimes official reasons aren't the true reasons, but in this case, who knows?

Um, he didn't pull it...they told Dykstra they would honor the scholarship, even though they had reservations. They also told him they would need him to work more on basketball, and make it a priority. He didn't want to, so he decided to part ways with us. We did not pull his scholarship.

mplscyclone - nice get to dig this post back up...do you have a research department culling past threads at all times?! There certainly are a lot of people who said one thing and now will have some "rationale" (read:excuse) as to why this is a different situation and what they previously said does not apply.
cyismydog - you are quite naive...this is all semantics. I'm sure McDermott didn't show up one day and say "were pulling your scholarship"...he met with the kid and made him feel unwanted by ISU and probably put some sort of guilt trip on him for not progressing to Big 12 standards and then offered to help him find a new home if he "decided" not to come to ISU.
I doubt you spend much time at places where you are made to feel unwanted...huh?

Serious question to all of you: Have you ever known someone personally that was a big recruit? Have you ever seen the process from the player-side of things? Because I have, and it doesn't always work how it's explained in press releases.
Like I said before, I realize it's Dykstra's decision, but ISU put him in a spot where they knew what his decision would ultimatley be. Parents do stuff like that to their kids all the time.
I'm not advocating anyone getting fired off of this. I was just curious if people's opinions changed.

I don't see how I attacked you when I basically said that the "official" reasons may be different than reality, but I was just saying that no one really knows who initiated the decommitting. Maybe the kid really doesn't want to come here anymore. He wrote a very nice letter to that effect I remember reading.
I'm not attacking you...I was just asking if you dug up an old thread so you could say "I was right and you were wrong".
Since you are far more superior when it comes to knowing how the recruiting process works, could you answer a question for me? Has this ever happened at another school or is Iowa State and Greg McDermott the first one to ever to have this happen? Because from my peasant outsider's view, this is somewhat common.
I don't really see it is being dramatical. I just don't see why people need to jump really.
I could see if I posted like "HA HA YOU WERE ALL WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" to get posts like I did above. All I asked is what people's feelings were about it, now that everything played out.
From a basketball perspective, I'm glad that this guy isn't coming here. He's a 2 star now, and from what I've heard by people who've actually attended Rock Valley games is that this guy wasn't Big 12 ready. From a human perspective, I still kind of feel bad for the guy: you commit early to ISU; you're excited, then you're going to end up playing for South Dakota State or some school like that instead.
I dug up an old thread because I was cross referencing the Rivals 100 for 2011 to some information here. I came across this conversation and was curious about it.
If I wanted to throw salt at people, I would've dug this up in May. I don't claim to be right about anything on this topic; I didn't predict anything about Dykstra because I had never seen him play. Other people had their thoughts and predictions, and I was just curious where they were at now with all of it...

I'm not sure how I jumped on you. I said what the official reason was that was given, and acknowledged that sometimes what's official really isn't the story. I concluded that no one really knows.
That seemed pretty even-handed to me, yet you implied I attacked you. That's what's dramatic.
Fair enough. I re-read your post and yeah it wasn't an attack; at least not yours.
I also do think that if anyone not named mplscyclone or cyclonenum1 posts that question, people react to it much differently. I was asking a question just to ask it; not to prove people wrong, not to purposely **** them off, or anything like that.
Well, maybe they would listen to you if you made knowledgeable and informed posts.
My thoughts... I do not know how anything "wen't down".
But even IF ISU had a discussion about concerns about Dykstra's development, and lets him know that he won't be prepared for Big 12 Basketball unless he devotes more time to Basketball development, and thus will likely not get playing time because there will be better players to put in the game. THAT is not the same as pulling a scholarship. It's being honest and open, which is better than the kid arriving at ISU to get no playing time because he didn't work hard enough to get into the lineup. As long as we do not say, "You're scholarship offer has been withdrawn" but instead say, "The decision is yours, but you're going to have to work hard to get to the level of competition to break the lineup", then I believe there is nothing wrong with that.
I love ISU basketball and focus most of my time on this board in the Basketball threads. It's pretty easy to see that there is bad blood between various members. I have had my quarell with mpls, but we worked it out in PM and everything was fine. I still often don't agree with what he's said and sometimes pushes the limit and is asking for trouble. But, it's better than it has been early on. That being said, there have been plenty of personal jabs back at mpls that are unnecessary as well.
I love cimd and kg's input on this board and greatly appreciate the work they do to provide their opinions and information. I think we all can try a little harder to not let threads get derailed as personal issues with eachother. Yeah, there has been problems in the past, but if we all take each post for what it's worth, and respond to the post without shots at eachother, it'll make the board more enjoyable. If somebody calls you out, respond to that portion via PM and things will likely get resolved more quietly and was likely just a misunderstanding in the first place.
