Basketball Blog: Thinking beyond 2010

Mike Taylor or Wesley Johnson ring a bell. Everyone said the same thing when we signed them and they both will be on NBA rosters next year. There are good players still out there and they have to get one signed. Salter is in our back yard and is the #3 rated Juco player in the country he is pretty good. Why wouldn't we get him in for a visit one player like that can mean 5-7 more wins in a season. Guard play is a must for recruiting.

Fine but we didn't sign those guys in the middle of May. It was way earlier than that. You're not getting my point. If there was a handful of good players out there, I'd be all for it. But there isn't.

Find a guy who can legitimately help you win next year? Bring him on. If he's not a Big 12 caliber player, why waste everybody's time?

I totally agree with Chris here. Mike Taylor committed: 04/07/2006 Wes Johnson committed: 04/26/2006

If guys like this were out there they are gone by now IMO. Don't you think that Otz. know whos left, if they would fit our team, and what issues they have? At this point its not worth adding somebody who won't make grades, gets kicked off for outside issues, or leaves anyway because they won't play. Don't get me wrong, I'd love for us to pick up another PG.

And it's really tough to just give Salter a call and say "hey you should come visit here." That isn't how recruiting works. It is all about relationships that are built up over time.

Come on, Chris. Freddy can just call him and say "Do you know who I am?":jimlad:

It scares me that I had to add jimlad to avoid further response.

Chris: We will have nine scholarship players for 2010. Since FH has been announced, two more players have left. Why are we throwing in the towel for more recruits next season when we only have nine players? Why are you recommending that we not use all of our 2011 scholly's? Has anyone been paying attention to what's happened and continues to happen here? What I am reading is that we should give up trying for players next season, and then back off our recruiting for the following season. Then, maybe 2012 would be year one. It is almost guaranteed that we'll lose 2 players every season, so why would we cut ourselves short on recruiting? I just don't get it with this basketball program. Support for FH is based on him bringing in immediate talent, not his coaching ability. If we are only concerned with the long term picture 2 years from now, why was the head coaching hire made so abruptly?

Immediate talent? Where did you get that idea?

There aren't many guys to get in spring. That's been the deal for quite a while.

Recruiting in the spring is tough to begin with. When a new head coach has to start recruiting at the beginning of May, that makes the task even more daunting, which is why I pushed so hard for Iowa State to retain Otzelberger.

Chris, I realize it is hard to recruit this time of year, but don't you think it is crucial to get another guard for 2010? Our guards are going to need a rest, and if one goes down with an injury, we are going to be in a very bad situation.

Agree, if there's a worthy player. That may not be the case. Maybe Salter wasn't interested.

Hey I totally agree. But the guy has to be worthy though. If not, don't give him a scholarship. Maybe we can discover another Brian Peterson out there? Something to think about.

You're crazy if you think that Salter would give us 5-7 more wins. He may be the third ranked JUCO from one service, but if he were really that good, he would have offers piled up. Instead, he's likely heading to a scrambling iowa program over some mid major offers. ISU has known about Salter for a long time. And so has UNI and Drake. None have offered. Looks to me like they would rather either bank the scholarship or offer someone else.

If we are worrying about 2012 right now instead of 2010 and 2011 we have some seriously misguided focus. Without question, our prior coach left us with a very bare cupboard but we made the rush hire we did supposedly for immediate recruiting benefits...Otz to keep everyone and FH to use his connections to make some recruiting rain.

I do think support for FH rests a little on him being able to bring in talent in relatively short order but, make no mistake, his real support from many has no deeper rationale than he is Fred Hoiberg.

HMMM Fran at Iowa just called Salter and said why don't you come on a visit and he did??? Last Friday. He had only been lookin at him for a couple weeks. You can't tell me the #3 Juco point guard is playing in our back yard and we haven't talked to him. I bet TJ knows him from scouting other JC's. If Fran at IOWA can do it why can't we get him in we have better facilities and need a point guard. I thought someone said he would not qualify until july? grades or something maybe thats why people are backing off. Watch though if he goes to Iowa he will be a good player. If we do not get a point guard I think it will be a longgggggg season or two.

Did you every think to consider that if he really is that good.
He may not want to go to a program that has a multi-year
returning Senior starter? The first thought of most Jucos is
can I play right away.
