Basketball Blog: Thinking beyond 2010

I like Oliver's potential a lot. He's a lanky kid with long arms who can disrupt on defense. And he has guard skills. So until these rumors are official, I hear nothing, I see nothing, I...

Paige is ok? Wow

Isn't he like a top 5-10 pg in nation, and top 25-50 overall? Also i don't think there is anyway Woodbury goes to ISU. Isn't he a huge Iowa fan?

Paige is ok...though from what I saw of him...he was alot better as a freshman...though he did have better talent around him then...wasn't very aggressive..reminds me of a smaller DG in that he doesn't make alot of mistakes..though doesn't shine when he needs to.

Woodbury is all about upside...NEEDS to get more aggressive...playing against Ames DMcD schooled him in the post...and Woodbury has a 4 inch advantage on him...not good..he also needs to bulk up a bunch...He does have some good post moves but in college he'll need to refine them more.

Havent seen Gessell or Staten play...but from what I heard...talent wise it goes

1)Staten
2)Paige
3)Woodbury
4)Gessell

yes I know Woodbury is a PF/C while the rest are guards...but 3 and 4 could switch.

I've heard great things about Gesell. He can do it all. At 6' 1" he can dunk easily. He should grow a couple inches since his dad and brother are around 6' 3" of 4" and his sister is around 6'. Check this interview with Hand Huddleson of Martin Bros. on the rivals hawkeye site:

no mention of Harrington?? he destroyed paige when they played eachother!

While we need guards, I like the fact we have a lot of size.

I'm thinking Stanford vs. ISU a few years back in womens baskeball. Who cared we had all those great guards? Their size trumped it.

Without those guards, ISU never gets there, regardless of post play.
Also, part of the problem that game was Standford's guards were just as good, if not better, than ISU's.

I wouldn't say destroyed, but he definitely played well. Harrington has a shot at being high major when it's all said and done.

Its just weird to me how ive played against Harrington and Paige and now they are pretty big options for ISU. not saying its a bad thing jus kinda weird.

I will be surprised if FH does not sign a guard from a JC this year, just for the sake of having someone to give DG some rest. There has to be more guards than any other postion available. It is hard to believe that there isn't a servicable point guard available.

Question: Is Jarrod Uthoff related to former standout Cyclone center Dean Uthoff? If so, then there will be a definite ISU connection there.

Is there a reason we don't seem to be going after Anthony Salter? Sounds like Iowa might get him? Or do we have our sights set higher?

Chris: We will have nine scholarship players for 2010. Since FH has been announced, two more players have left. Why are we throwing in the towel for more recruits next season when we only have nine players? Why are you recommending that we not use all of our 2011 scholly's? Has anyone been paying attention to what's happened and continues to happen here? What I am reading is that we should give up trying for players next season, and then back off our recruiting for the following season. Then, maybe 2012 would be year one. It is almost guaranteed that we'll lose 2 players every season, so why would we cut ourselves short on recruiting? I just don't get it with this basketball program. Support for FH is based on him bringing in immediate talent, not his coaching ability. If we are only concerned with the long term picture 2 years from now, why was the head coaching hire made so abruptly?

It is pretty simple really. There aren't many quality 2010 guys left. That's it. Why bring in a guy who you know isn't good enough? Why bring someone in if you know they'll probably leave at the end of next season because they A) won't play, B) get kicked off the team of C) just don't belong?

Mike Taylor or Wesley Johnson ring a bell. Everyone said the same thing when we signed them and they both will be on NBA rosters next year. There are good players still out there and they have to get one signed. Salter is in our back yard and is the #3 rated Juco player in the country he is pretty good. Why wouldn't we get him in for a visit one player like that can mean 5-7 more wins in a season. Guard play is a must for recruiting.

Seems to me the Grayer Boys may be our fall back.
Kevin seems to be legit and Jeff Jr hopefully able to
log some minutes and play some D at the 3.
Gives us 5 available in 11 starting with Cook and Uthoff.
Then at least 2 would open up in 12 for Staten and Jok.

Agree with this. We NEED to find a guard somehow, some way, for next year. An athletic, do-it-all, combo guard preferably :)
