I have noticed since ive come back, how spoiled i got by ames drink prices. So much cheaper to drink in ames than west des moines\court ave, and definitely nothing compared to bars in a bigger city.

I'm a 5 year alum so I usually head to 212 when I go downtown. I go to Thumbs every now and then, still love that place, love the mix of people.
But hands down, best bar I've ever spent a lot of time in of all my bar going years is Welch Ave Station. They have: pizza/snacks, great beer on tap, a good music selection, waitresses, knowledgeable bartenders, great tv's, places to sit, pool tables/darts/ games.

Gotta go with Sporty's (Sportsman's Lounge) on a Friday night downtown. Used to live across the street from Es Tas and spent many-a-paychecks there...

I'm with the crowd that says they both have their pros and cons. If I just wanna drink and hang out (i.e. Olde Main) I go downtown.

Fridays and Saturdays definitely end up in campustown though when I wanna let loose and have a good time.

I'm guessing that those voting for downtown are current alumni/non-student Ames (area) residents, whereas those voting for Campustown are either current students or alums who never lived in Ames outside of being a student.

If a 21 year old told me they preferred downtown, I'd be as surprised as a 30 year old telling me they preferred Campustown.

Definitely the case, with one notable exception. Welch Ave. Station caters to a pretty diverse mix of older alums/locals and students who appreciate being able to sit and not be drowned out by blaring music (not that there's anything wrong with that) or like to play pool. I'm trying to think of a bar in Main Street that is unusually popular with undergrads and all I can think of is Olde Main on dollar draws night.

I think when I was a student I was split about 70/30 between Welch and Main St. We went to Mickey's followed by Welch Ave Station EVERY Thursday to get free pizza and $3.75 pitchers of PBR, respectively. We also went to Sporty's on Main St. fairly often to play shufflepuck before every bar in Ames had a table. Oh, and don't try and pretend that none of you went to The Zone on Friday nights for penny pitchers!!! I'm not buying it!!

Until I read this thread I didn't think there was any other reason to go to the bars downtown.

I got obliterated there one night, I think I spent $3.05 plus tips.
$3.00 for cover charge and 5 penny pitchers.
You know that huge set of stairs that leads directly to the outside? I fell down all of them....

You were not the first...or last! I always liked it because none of the bartenders or bouncers gave a ****. We would always push a bunch of tables together in the raised up area and play A-hole or what have you with our penny pitchers all night.

It's odd I remember going up those stairs, but never down. Was there another exit?

Spent many hours in Whiskey River playing hearts and drinking way more than is recommended.

We went to the Fox I last weekend and it smelled like cat ****. Never going back.

I did most of my downtown drinking at Tradewinds and campustown drinking at People's. Both are no longer with us.

Never went to a bar besides campus town. Wed nite at Sips, Thurs started at mojazz with 5ers, then on to wherever. We were pretty much at Peoples, Lumpys and most of the time ended up at Sips. Knew the bartends/bouncers at sips.

What it comes down to is if your looking for cougars or naive college girls... I personally have no preference!

Haha, it is nice to see someone be comfortable with their standards.
