The "Why can't we have a cheap bar in SW Ames" thread got me wondering where the denizens of this board get their lips wet...

Downtown vs Campustown

GO!

Live in campustown so on the weekends that's where I go...but I do love me some pint night Wednesdays at Olde Main!

Being a student, I frequently visit the establishments around Welch Avenue such as Paddy's, Headliners, Capones, EsTas, Outlaws, and Mickeys.

Downtown, I venture to Welch maybe twice a year. But I have been out of school for 5 years now.

Probably most interesting to see how this plays out by demographic. I am a grad student, but also got my undergrad degree at ISU.

Friday Nights:

DG's/London Underground and maybe a late night trip to the Fox for people watching and karaoke.

Any other day of the week:

Campus town

Word. I thought about this one too...Even when I lived in West Ames in my early 20's we made it downtown to get enhanced. Less eye candy, better service....

While I enjoyed some good nights at Whiskey River during my undergrad days, I generally stuck to Campustown while I was in school.

Now that I'm old, I prefer the downtown area as opposed to Campustown.

But it doesn't really matter as I only get to go out in Ames maybe once a year.

oh man we used to do the trio trouble back in the early 2000's downtown. Hit up Tradewinds, followed by Whiskey and finish up with Tip Top. Absolutely zero women but the drinks were cheap and we could get crazy as hell! Normally nobody would throw us out cause they needed the business. Of course we were on Welch all the time too, but sometimes you just need to get messed up with some messed up people in some messed up places.

The only downtown place I was wild about was Olde Main. Stuck with Campustown, etc. Thumbs was probably my favorite bar after People's/Lumpy's closed.

My vote goes for Campustown, but I've never really lived in Ames not being a studentish.

Hmmm..do we lump Thumbs and Mother's Pub/La Boheme in with the Campus town?? They are more like a semi-autonomous protectorate of Campus Town

I'm guessing that those voting for downtown are current alumni/non-student Ames (area) residents, whereas those voting for Campustown are either current students or alums who never lived in Ames outside of being a student.

If a 21 year old told me they preferred downtown, I'd be as surprised as a 30 year old telling me they preferred Campustown.

Probably, but there are DOZENS of "kids" out each weekend on Main St.

There's only a few good bars in ames, but i'll go with campustown even though downtown has olde main and i loved drinking there (although does that count as a bar really?).

They both have their positives and negatives. I like to chill at WAS when i go up there.

My favorite was probably Baudelaire and I loved Boheme when it was open....then Welch Ave was my third choice. Other than that, everything is sooo ******.
