Auto insurance - car accident advice

The next problem is finding a car or fixing the one that was damaged. I heard that getting a car repaired is taking forever right now. And I found out that finding a car is really tough. And expensive. I had forgotten the last time I bought a new car they were still doing the low interest rate or $3000 rebates. No rebates right now.
Used car prices have gone way up - a fact not always recognized by insurance companies. I'm assuming there's a good chance the car is totaled if it was T-boned.

The deductible is collision on the car only. The uninsured motorist coverage will only come into play if your mom was hurt and needs treatment. There is not an additional deductible for uninsured motorist.
What state does your mom live in?
Here in Iowa.

T boned was excessive terminology from me as it was the easiest way to explain the accident. My mom realized the girl was running the red light and slammed on breaks. They fd up the front / bumper.. Still drivable.

Insurance companies have recently realized the cost of a used car went up.... claims are up, too. Don't be shocked when your open your renewal next time and see a decent jump in your rates. It's coming for all of us, regardless of state we live in.

You can pick out some of the folks that don’t have insurance as they seem to duct tape, zip tie, tarp strap, paint, put cardboard on or just plain drive around with parts hanging off their cars.

I’m amazed about how many people that drive around with no insurance or even worse yet driving on a suspended license.

Another positive for your mom..... even though her insurance company is paying out, she will not be surcharged for the claim.
I’ve heard these type of statements before. Told that an act of God does not raise your premium, but hey 2 in 3 years……yeah then we do it. At least farm bureau does.

I heard though that used car prices are going down. Google Carvana and used prices. Insurance will find any reason to raise insurance rates every year. In 17 years of paying car and home insurance never once did it go down always up.

The cost to repair has only been going up.

My mom was recently involved in a car accident the past two weeks. She was t boned at an intersection. She had a witness talk to the police stating the other car was the one who ran the red light and hit my mom. We found out the other person was lying and telling police / insurance that my mom ran the red light.

The police report came out and found the other person at fault, so we thought everything would be clean moving forward. Now we have found out the other person didn't have auto insurance... And she called her previous company to get reinstated after the accident falsely telling them she wasn't involved in an accident. Now her provider has gotten the police report and is getting very sketchy.

I'm guessing my mom is just at mercy of both insurance companies figuring something out.. But what happens if the other insurance company rejects her claim. Is this something that has to go to court to be resolved? Or would my mom just do the full coverage claim and deal with her premium going up. I've never been involved in a crash where someone didn't have insurance so I really have no idea or advice for my mom.

Thanks in advance.
I have only had 2 accidents in the last 20 years. Both uninsured. Filed claim with my agent, they paid for everything above my deductible. I had uninsured coverage. They then went after the other person for payment. Other persons fault both times.

That's likely because they raised overall rates for everyone, not because you got put in the bucket for having filed the claim.

Your mom needs to file a claim with her own insurance company. Her company will go after the uninsured person through a process called subrogation. Your mom will be fine and have nothing to worry about. I'm an insurance agent, so I go through this every day.
YEP. this is what i had to do when my car was hit by a 800 car insurance user. my insurance took care of it and went after them.

No, I called and the agent checked on the raise for the large jump in my insurance. They answer the agent got from the big boys was, I had two acts of God. Two claims of them raise your rates, not one.

Ok this is somewhat true. What they take off is an accident free discount in a lot of states. So technically you are not being charged for an accident, u are just losing a discount. Insurance industry is brutal with this type of nonsense

It’s this. I was t-boned by one who ran a stop sign. Put my van up on two wheels. he was underinsured. Total payout was $80k ($25k medical, $8k vehicle, rest P&S). It took nearly two years to get that money. My insurance tried to settle for $50k total thinking my debt to the medical was a burden. Once they learned I paid in cash they started to ease up. FWIW, within two years you must file a lawsuit, otherwise nothing (accident was in Iowa).

Track every mile for rehab.. every copay, log every pain, every discomfort. Log how she felt immediately after the accident… the burden of dr visits. And… this is a biggie, don’t share her entire medical file with her insurance… only share what came from the accident. They will use that information against you.

That's definitely a part of it, too. I worked in the actuarial/pricing department for a national carrier, they're always taking rate every 6 or 12 months to keep up with (or I guess stay ahead of) losses.

Dash cam. Don’t know why everyone doesn’t have one in this day. Cheap and reliable.

So sorry your mom is going through this. File claim. Get witness to talk to your insurance too if you can. Good luck.

Oh right... dash cams. Every car we own. So far two rolled stop signs and three no seat belt violations saved with a dash cam (ISU plates in Coralville).
