Auburn vs Houston

Rebounding will decide the game, they are very aggressive. Also, we will HAVE to inbound through their full court press they start out in under their basket.
I haven't watched the replay yet, but I think ISU will have the advantage in guard play. Can the Auburn guards handle the pressure will be the key for them.

Also, I'm glad Milan has put on some weight and muscle for this opponent. He may be spending some time guarding Broome when Jefferson rests or if in foul trouble.

Torvik has Auburn a slight favorite at .8. I have a feeling Vegas will have it at -2.5 by game day. I'm starting to get not so good feelings about this game.

I feel our defense is not as good at last year's. Is our offense improved enough to take up the slack? Our rebounding is very good though.

its been 3 games.....how can you make any determinations about this year already?

Especially when 15-20% of the minutes being played are guys who have never played together before, in a defensive system as strong as TJ's. Maui will be a good litmus test, however this team has not been challenged at all yet. A win would not shock me, but neither would a loss

FWIW, this team has averaged 48% on 2 pt field goals, and 30.6% from 3. Do you really believe that is all the better they'll shoot this year? I personally do not

lol our 10th man who's barely played so far this season will keep a 1st team AA "in check."

that would be awesome, but just a bit unlikely?

We know what Watson is. He hasn't gotten worse since last season. The roster has just gotten better. He doesn't have ideal size to guard Broome but has a nice mixture of length and speed.

This game here might be one of those times he's situationally useful even if limited offensively.

I would feel better going into this game with Big Rob and Tre King out there to body up and beat up Broome, though. Yeah, I know those two had their limitations but they weren't afraid to go Battle of Verdun with a guy like that until both sides were exhausted in the trenches. Jackson and Jefferson look the part so far, but this assignment is going to be quite the tough one for their first P4 on P4 basketball game.

Cross posting from the IU Indy game thread:
Johni Broome is a huge huge test for our bigs - maybe the best true center in the country along with Dickinson (I'd take Broome, but that's just me).

He put up 20 & 9 with 5 blocks against Houston's bigs - and against North Alabama in their last game had 30 & 17 in 26 minutes - insane against any competition.

I don't think any of their guards have stood out especially, but there's 5 of them that have played 20-25 minutes a game and average 10-12 point a game so far. The biggest problem for us is that those 5 guards have shot 42% from deep totaled 8.5 made threes a game.

It's not a good matchup for us, at any point in the season. Houston was not able to get them sped up - Auburn only had 11 turnovers that game. To be successful we need to get their guards flustered and turning the ball over.

Broome has one weakness.

He's a career 61.0% FT shooter.

Time for a bit of hack-a-Johni.

I think Houston will be very good, but I feel like people forget how good Shead was and how big of a loss he is.
This is correct - they are solid and potential E8 or possibly F4 potential but they may be missing a star that Shead was.

These physical teams are the ones we seem to match up well against. It's the ones that spread the floor with 4 perimeter shooters and good slashers that we struggle against.

Just my thoughts so far on 3 games. I didn't say this will be what the team is but just how I feel so far. I have not made any comments in regards to 3pt shooting.

I have noticed though they are being more judicial when they trap. I don't know if it's because they feel this isn't the strength of the bigs or maybe they think we are better defensively playing straight up more. The guards are really getting up into the perimeter so could be the staff feels good about the interior defense when there is penetration.

That is an issue, but I'm confident in the ability of Lipsey/Gilbert/Jones or even with Heise or Momcilovich in there to break the press. There will be turnovers, but there will also be open looks on the other end when we break it. I have yet to see Indrusaitis in there under pressure to have any idea how he will do.

I like the change. Trapping can often be more effective when your opponent isn't anticipating it every time the ball gets to position X on the floor. If it comes once in a while it has a little more shock factor to it and the help has to recognize it before reacting to it rather than anticipating it before it comes.

I think it does help to have a few true post options both defensively and offensively. As far as 3 pt shooting goes, I was surprised that it was as low as it was myself, and i was shocked that our 2 pt percentage was as high as it was. I feel like we are leading the nation in missed layups/bunnies

He's a defensive specialist. Not like I am saying he'd shut the dude down. Just that he makes more sense from a skillset standpoint than anyone other than Jefferson.

I would break that into a couple of categories. The first is trapping on the baseline. I have seen more of that in the corner this year than under the bucket. Not sure if that is because people have scouted and don't go there, we are not adept at doing it as well yet, or if our bigs are better able to handle post D 1-on-1. Secondly is the trapping out high. It really shows up when Jefferson is involved with his athleticism.
