Mac was surely smart enough to end up with center field placement to eliminate a tough angle on the field goal. Or not?

Here's my best argument for CMC going forward. He HAS learned and got better as a coach.
If he puts up Snyder numbers (and i dont think he will quite get to that) he will have a statue next to the Campanile, the same size as the Campanile.
Mac got fired because of 2006, but the missed Big 12 North Championships in 2004 and 2005 both played into that.

2003 was devastating. Two non. conference wins against weak opponents and a winless conference season where we were not competitive. Offensive touchdowns were celebrated about as often as a solar eclipse. We were absolutely awful. But had injuries and were young. Add in the Jason Berryman situation. Stars were all lined up in 2005. We were all in. Weak schedule. Veterans returning that actually played decently. Disappointing season hurt recruiting. Then came 2006. Career ending injury to Carper. We lost a possible pro as a sophomore. Add in the loss of Matt Robertson earlier to steroid violations. Iowa State struggled. Recruiting was absolutely dead because Mac was likely to be fired. It really was that bad. No one wanted Mac fired. We felt terrible and honored the contract in full. That being said, we have a lifetime coach in Campbell. We are in the hunt even now.
As awful as the losses to Mizzou in 2004 and @ Kansas in 2005 were, it wouldn't have changed the trajectory much IMO. Sheesh OU stomped Colorado in the 2004 Big XII CCG 42-3, and Texas skull drugged the Buffaloes in the 2005 Big XII CCG 70-3. 'Twould have just meant back to back Big XII CCG game blowout losses for the Cyclones IMO. Campbell can’t carry Snyder’s water. Synder did that with tougher conference schedules at a place which was considered worse than ISU when he arrived.
Since CMC hire, the conference has gotten markedly easier and facilities have greatly improved. At an absolute minimum he needs to win one more game just to be on par with last yr given the incredibly easy schedule (and even then I would consider it a step back as there should have been growth for a team returning everyone).
Now if he can somehow close out with at least two more victories (looking doubtful the way they have played the last 3-4 weeks) then at least we would have taken a step forward from last season. Anything less (given SOS) and it is treading water or worse.
People are greatly underestimating the change in SOS that has occurred given conference realignment. Our schedules going forward are going to be markedly easier than the DMac era.
You didn't respond when I asked if you were 1 win away from being satisfied?
The top ten teams in the country are a step above everyone else, but when you look at 11th to 40th, there is a lot of parity and matchups are tough to predict. If we can finish 9-3 or even 8-4 in such an environment, that has to be considered a good year for ISU. We have the potential to do better, but we also have the potential to do worse. That's why they play the games.
