not picking a fight. I don’t understand the disdain for Huggins. He put several programs on the map. Resurrected KSU. Went home and STAYED. Players play really hard. Fast paced physical and fun to watch. Seems really dedicated to his players. Remember a few years back in the tournament I believe one of his players had a traumatic leg injury? Bob was laying on the floor holding the kid. I’m sold.

I just hate the "if everything is a foul, nothing's a foul because they can't catch them all" style.
I'm into a game that's much more entertaining to me than a slugfest.

I get that he has "earned" next year, but I don't think that the large list of things we discussed earlier will all happen. This means we would have gone from going to like 7 straight tournaments to 1 of 4 years with at least 2 of those years being worse than anything McDermott ever did, and McDermott was deemed the death of Hilton magic. Ideally you would skip the damage done to our brand by having zero tournament wins since any of our future recruits have been in highschool, and start the rebuild immediately this year.

On the flip side I don't know how his firing would be perceived by candidates to replace him. If they will see it as having too short of a leash, or if they will see the downward trend and win lose record and see that prohms off years are reeeaaallly off.

Another thing to consider is that we don't pay enough for great results. He is the 7th highest paid coach in the big 12. I'm sure as whole his assistants also are on the lower as well, so I guess unless ISU ponies up it isn't fair to assume we will have consistent results
Yeah I'm in agreement. We were ready to throw basically any amount at Fred to keep him to stay but that didn't go as planned obviously. And even though we don't pay what the other's are paying, we're still probably in the top half of the conference the last 5 years as far as successful seasons go. What I do like is that the recruits we are getting are excited to get on campus and make their mark. All it takes is one class (look at Fred's), and you have something to truly build on. It wasn't until Fred got his true nucleus of guys before this program took off, and I know that was earlier in Fred's career here than this next year will be for Steve.

There should be zero reason for next year's team to not be successful. The bar should be the NCAA tournament in my opinion. Winning a game in there will only happen if you get there. There were quotes earlier where guys weren't buying into what Steve was selling, but those guys are gone. Next year there are brand new faces and if Steve can't sell them, as well as keep building on what he's taught to the returning guys, I don't see any hope for him as the coach. But if we can see these newcomers do what Prohm is teaching, and see come together and succeed, I think a lot of people will start to ease off a bit and provide more support if that happens.

It surprises me so many think if we have a similar record next year Steve will get canned.
I honestly think if we have a similar record he will not be the head coach, but I obviously am not in the know. I will 100% be less supportive if we put out the same product next year as we did this year.

Context again. I hate everything Huggins brought to college basketball, but his only "down year" period happened in his transition to the Big 12. Otherwise, one off year in forever. He's not a valid example on this.

Weber has long-noted recruiting problems. Down years should be expected from him, but also not tolerated, because recruiting matters.
If you don't have more than one or two "down years" in your entire career, you're probably viewed as one of the best coaches in college. We had that in Fred. He was magnificent, perfect, and everything we wanted for as our coach. He left us and put Iowa State and more specifically Jamie Pollard in a tough situation where they had to scramble to make a decision. Personally, I wish we would've gone with TJ. I thought he would've been a perfect hire and would also be my next coach suggestion if Prohm does end up getting fired next year.

And I think this style of play comes and bites them in the a** come tournament time. At some point, refs don't let them get away with the constant hand checks, the bumps, the grabbing coming off screens, etc. The game becomes a FT shooting contest.

In their loss against Villanova, Villanova shot 23-27 from the line.

In their loss against Gonzaga, Gonzaga shot 21-32 from the line.

In their loss against SF-Austin, SFA shot 29-39 from the line.

In their loss against Kentucky, UK shot 26-32 form the line.

Those are their last 4 losses in the NCAA tournament. Teams were making and taking more FT's in every single game.

Bruce Weber has been a head coach since 1998. Bob Huggins has been a head coach since 1984. Both of them have had years sprinkled in where they haven't been very good at all. Both of them have made the final 4 and Weber coached in a national title.

Not really fair bringing those guys up and comparing it to a guy who's been coaching since 2011 and has had two bad years in that time frame.

I only used their big 12 figures to make it comparable. Stevie is still not swimming as fast as others.

Yeah both of those coaches have had some good seasons in the Big 12, but they've had their struggles as well. Huggins struggled a little bit until he got a couple freshman and some JUCO guys to come in and they started playing that rough and tough style of basketball. Those 4 years they were really good and then they fell off last year and this year they're limping to the finish line.

Bruce Weber sort of had a similar situation as Steve when coming to K-State. Frank Martin left him a solid bunch and Weber ended up sharing a Big 12 regular season title with KU his first year. It looked like Weber found a solid bunch of guys to help extend the success and a guy named Marcus Foster was going to be one of the faces of the Big 12. Foster couldn't stay out of the dog house the following year and the team struggled because of that. He left after that year (sound familiar?) KSU missed the tournament two years in a row. Bruce brought in a group of solid guys the year after Foster left who although missed the tournament their freshman year, ended up going to 3 consecutive NCAA tournaments, had an elite 8 appearance, as well as finished tied for first last year in the Big 12. Those guys being Dean Wade, Barry Brown Jr., and Kamau Stokes.

Steve, Bruce, and even Huggins have struggled after roster turnover. It's tough to find guys to initially buy into the program and to become fully invested, and it gets even tougher now that players are looking to leave so early. The year after Huggy's guys left, WVU sucked. ISU and KSU now suck after losing a ton of contributors from last year. So it just doesn't happen to Steve, but it's something that Steve needs to figure out how to handle. Steve needs to get his formula correct and see if he can't build something, and I think the incoming class provides an excellent opportunity to do so.

So, is Prohm going to become the next Nance, Trickey, McDermott or can he turn things around next year and save his ISU reputation?

Having 20 loss seasons puts you in company as a coach you would prefer to stay away from. They are already dangerously close.

I have little confidence they won't make 20 losses.

This entire thread digs deeply into this exact question. Read away and pick a side.

I will say that its a 50/50 proposition that csp will be gone after next year, if it's a repeat of this miserable year...Just My Opinion...and remember GO Cyclones!

I'll bring my flame and torch with me. Anything else I need to come ready with?

We'll be at The Royal Mile watching the Arsenal match. Even if you're not a soccer fan you can experience what a recent successful coaching change looks like. All are free to join.

The groupthink will be off the charts.
