Another pet peeves thread: Tips for road ragers

My biggest pet peeve is people not using turn signals. Nothing I hate more than waiting on someone only to have them turn instead.

That's one thing I real like about some European cars. A lot of them have their turn signal stalk set-up so that you can just tap it and it will blink on it's own a few times. I never thought this was a big deal until I no longer had that option. Maybe some other companies have now followed suite? Crap like this should be standard on all cars.


Another peeve of mine about cars is when they don't have auto-down. My Mazda only has auto-down on the drivers side. I'd like auto up and down on both sides.

My Accord has that, first car I've had with it on both. Really nice, til you move to my wife's Forrester that only has driver's - and only auto-down at that.

I don't like the company car, state car road rage thing. Even if they don't have road rage, but are driving like idiots. I have never called one in, but it wouldn't be that hard to do if someone was really mad.

In the past three months between Ames and Des Moines on 35 I have seen...

At least 3 people in state vehicles cutting people off, tailgating people, and intentionally trying to pinch them in. Driving well over the speed limit, and then slowing down like they are playing with them. I have also seen people in state cars reading while driving, one lady was reading a book, or novel, nothing work related.

People in company marked cars doing the same thing.

Also saw some people in an ISU van tailgating cars that were going between 76-80 between Ames and Des Moines. They had to be going over 90 at times.

Generally speaking now, it also seems like, asphalt, paving, cement type trucks have absolutely no manners when it comes to highway driving.

If a driver wants to get in a ******* match with me on the highway it's one thing, but I have no respect for someone that does it in a car or truck that they don't pay for.......

Are you talking about power windows? If so, I doubt you will see auto up on any power windows in cars manufactured for sale in the US. It is unsafe. A child can mess around, bump the switch and get caught in the closing window. You can say that people should be watching their kids all you want, but the manufacturers know that they will lose those lawsuits if the kid is killed or injured by the power window - and those judgements will be huge.

I stand corrected (and extremely surprised). My sunroof also has auto open but you have to hold the switch to close. I assumed it was for the same safety reasons.

How old is the Accord?

'08, Sunroof is autoclose too.

It also has a cool (but rather un-useable) remote open thing on the remote entry. Hit and hold the unlock (or something) and all the windows and sunroof open. Wish it had it for close, but maybe your reasoning is why it doesn't.

Personally, I'd find the remote close far more useful than open.

Most people have their side mirrors set-up so that they can see the side of their car. The last thing you need to see is the side of your car. If you set up your mirrors correctly you should be able to follow a car from your rear view to your side mirrors to your peripheral vision without ever losing them or even turning your neck. I've had some cars that have had terrible blind spots (Honda Element and Nissan 350Z come to mind) and this worked for them. It's hard to get used to after doing it wrong for so long but it makes sense.

The left lane issue bothers me more than anything.

I also don't like when people ride my tail when I'm on the motorcycle. This usually only happens when I'm stuck in traffic.

Incorrect side mirror setup is another one that most people fail.

My father would probably roll over in his grave if he heard this but I'd like to see a law that wouldn't allow semi's to be in the far left lane if there are 3 or more lanes.

You could have just left it at that and it still would have been a relevant statement. There's nothing I hate worse than when someone attaches their front bumper to my rear bumper. I mean, I get that gas is expensive, but this ain't NASCAR - drafting my 6 is highly inappropriate...

the other day i was going to merge into a turn lane, had my signal on and was about to go where there is a cut in the turn lane line (not sure how to explain it, but it is where you are supposed to merge at) when all of the sudden another car comes up behind me and almost rear ended me because they decided at the last second that they had to get into the turn lane before i did. then i had to circle the block once just so i could get into the turn lane.

If they're in ISU vehicles, turn 'em in. Date, time, location, plate number. Otherwise they give us all a bad name, besides being "unsafe." I know at least one person who had to answer to those kind of reports.

I also hate when motorcycles rev their engines at a stop light. This is an instance sign that they are a tool. Your motorcycle isn't going to stall if you don't rev it up.

Maybe not spelling "instant" correctly is a sign that you are a tool.

You do realize that all motorcycles are manual transmissions and it is sometimes required to rev up the engine in order to release the clutch without killing the motor.

If you are talking about a constant revving yes it can be annoying but what about people who listen to their radio with the windows down. You mad at them too??

At the intersection of Stange and 13th st, it's a 4-way stop for the summer. Twice in the past couple of days, it's been my turn to go (turning left w/ signal on) and I have to stop in the intersection because the driver across from me came straight across out of turn. Thought maybe my signal wasn't working so I checked all those lights when I got home. All worked. Pay attention!

My main pet peeve: drivers turning corners from either direction who don't go directly to the nearest lane (as the Iowa DL manual describes) but ride the dashed line between lanes or swoop way over to the farthest lane.

Old people in general are unsafe drivers alot of times. I think once you reach a certian age, say 70 you should be required to pass a driving test prior to the renewal of your license.

Driving in multiple lanes, EXTREMELY slow on the interstate (close to the posted minimum) is just as dangerous as driving to fast.

Those are two good ones.

I'd add people who drive on one of the two extremes (slow or fast) or are too conservative or aggresive when turning/merging.

If people had to pass a drivers test every year there would be a lot less people on the road:wink:

I dont know if I agree with the 25 age but I would be all for testing until you graduate high school (18ish) or something.

I have noticed that I have become much less aggressive driver after college.

It could be that I am required to take a defensive driving course because of my "frequent driver" status at work. The class is kinda lame but the principals are actually very applicable and almost no one follows them.
